The Litigation and Claims Paralegal provides comprehensive legal and claims support to the organization's attorneys and claims professionals. This position assists with all phases of litigation, manages claims-related documentation and reporting, coordinates discovery and document preservation efforts, and serves as a liaison between internal stakeholders, outside counsel, claims personnel, insurers, and third-party administrators. The role requires strong organizational skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a high-volume caseload in a fast paced corporate environment.

Responsibilities

Litigation Management

  • Assist with all phases of litigation, including case intake, investigation, discovery, and settlement.
  • Maintain litigation calendars and track critical case deadlines.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel, third-party administrators, and/or insurers regarding discovery, deadlines, budgets, status updates, and case management.
  • Draft routine legal correspondence, litigation reports, chronologies, and case summaries.
  • Organize and maintain litigation and claims files and document repositories.
  • Maintain databases relating to litigation and claims matters.

Claims Management

  • Assist in the review, investigation, evaluation, and administration of claims, including liability, professional liability, employment, property, and general business claims.
  • Gather and analyze claim documentation and supporting evidence.
  • Coordinate with claims adjusters, insurers, brokers, third-party administrators, and business units regarding claim status and resolution.
  • Track claim reserves, settlement activity, and claim-related expenditures.
  • Prepare reports regarding claim trends, litigation exposure, and risk management matters.

Discovery and Document Management

 

  • Assist outside counsel and third-party administrators with document collection, preservation, and production efforts.
  • Assist outside counsel and third-party administrators with obtaining information from internal stakeholders.
  • Manage legal holds and assist with compliance monitoring.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Assist with internal investigations and fact-gathering efforts.
  • Support risk management initiatives and insurance recovery efforts.
  • Monitor compliance with subpoena requests, regulatory inquiries, and document retention requirements.
  • Help identify litigation and claims trends and recommend process improvements.

Administrative and Reporting Functions

  • Manage matter management systems and legal department databases.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly litigation and claims reports.
  • Track outside counsel invoices and assist with legal spend management.
  • Support budget planning and forecasting related to litigation and claims expenses.
  • Maintain confidential and privileged information in accordance with company policies.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree, bachelor's degree, or Paralegal Studies certificate from an ABA-approved or accredited program preferred.
  • Paralegal certification (CP, ACP, RP, or similar credential) preferred.
  • Customarily has at least three (3) years of paralegal experience, with substantial litigation experience required.
  • Experience in insurance claims, risk management, healthcare litigation, corporate legal departments, or complex commercial litigation preferred.
  • Experience working directly with outside counsel and claims professionals preferred.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to read, review, and analyze large volumes of legal, medical, financial, and business documents.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive and privileged information.
  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods while conducting legal research, drafting documents, reviewing records, and managing case files; position involves prolonged periods of keyboarding and screen time.
