JOB PURPOSE:Ā 

The purpose of this position is toĀ serve as the managing attorney and legal director for the Clinical Law programs at Howard University School of Law.Ā Ā In collaboration with the Director of the Clinical Law Center and other staff, theĀ incumbentĀ will manage the legal operations for 10Ā live-client clinicsĀ improving client services, student growth and operational efficiency.Ā Ā

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:Ā 

This position does not have any direct reports, but will work in collaboration with the Assistant Director and Program Coordinator.Ā 

NATURE AND SCOPE:Ā 

Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, staff and students in the School of Law and other University departments.Ā  External contacts include government officials and a myriad of law affiliated institutions, agencies, and organizations, vendors, clinic clients, alumni, sponsor representatives, visitors and the general public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:Ā 

  • In collaboration with the Director of the Clinical Law CenterĀ and clinic staff, manageĀ the legal operations for the Clinical Law Center, includingĀ ensuringĀ compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, managingĀ conflictĀ checks andĀ improving all systems related to law practice management.Ā 

  • Improve and update all law practice policies, handbooks, procedures, systems and trainingsĀ to help improve client outcomes and student learning.Ā 

  • Work with the Director of the Clinical Law Center and clinic staffĀ to supportĀ all clinical facultyĀ in docket management, pedagogy development, file management/retention client communicationĀ and other legal tasks.Ā 

  • Work with the Director of the Clinical Law Center, clinic staffĀ and clinic faculty to improve client outcomes and student learning.Ā 

  • Leverage partnerships across the university and externally toĀ benefit programs, clients and students.Ā 

  • Collaborate on grant writing as needed.Ā 

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director in budget management and operational tasks.Ā 

  • Train faculty,Ā staffĀ and studentsĀ on policies and proceduresĀ of the Clinical Law Center.Ā 

  • Collaborate with Clinic Director and others on external communicationsĀ toĀ raiseĀ the profile of the Clinical Law Center’s work.Ā 

  • Collaborate with the Clinic Director on managing theĀ Civil Rights SCOTUS moot program.Ā 

  • Perform special projects and otherĀ dutiesĀ assigned byĀ Clinical Law Center leadership.Ā

Ā 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Ā 

JD plus at leastĀ 6Ā years of relevant legal experience required.Ā 

ExperienceĀ serving as an attorney or legal directorĀ in a legal servicesĀ organization or Clinical Law Center strongly preferred.Ā  Experience with law practice management is also preferred.Ā
