JOB PURPOSE:Ā 

The purpose of this position is toĀ operate orbitrapĀ ExplorisĀ 480 massĀ spectrometerĀ andĀ participateĀ in grant related research projects at theĀ RCMI Proteomics Core facility. The projects require extensive knowledge of Mass Spectrometry Proteomics and related data analysis techniques, proteinĀ chemistryĀ and biochemistry. This position typically reports to theĀ Director ofĀ RCMI Proteomics Core facility.Ā

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:Ā 

Under the supervision of theĀ RCMI Proteomics CoreĀ Director, formally plans, executes the designated project (s) in the laboratory.Ā TypicallyĀ responsible for performing non-supervisoryĀ duties, butĀ usuallyĀ participatesĀ in the training and supervision of the laboratory work of students.Ā Ā Ā

NATURE AND SCOPE:Ā 

Internal contacts includeĀ investigatorsĀ administrators, faculty, staff and students both within the department/center and University-wide. External contacts include government agencies, scientific collaborators, vendors, visitors, and theĀ general public.Ā 

Ā 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:Ā 

  • Operate and maintain OrbitrapĀ ExplorisĀ 480.Ā Plan, develop, execute, and coordinate strategies in pursuit of designated research project(s), and other types of projects as may be needed. Implement approved center/department policies and procedures in the pursuit/support of research projects and grant applications.Ā 
  • Interact with peers to gain experience on ongoing project(s), report to PI concerning project execution, research operation and recommend operational changes, as needed.Ā 
  • Prepare research manuscripts for publication, contribute to grant preparation, and contribute to preparation of annual reports.Ā 
  • Ensure that research goals andĀ objectivesĀ specified for the assigned project(s) areĀ accomplishedĀ in accordanceĀ withinĀ established priorities, time and funding limitations, or other specifications.Ā 
  • Develop and schedule project-specific research support plansĀ in accordance withĀ overall workload, project needs, and resources.Ā 
  • RecommendĀ additionalĀ equipment, software, and resources needed for project development. Prepare ad hoc reports on status of projects for the director.Ā 
  • Confer with andĀ advise staff, students and faculty toĀ provideĀ technical advice, problem solvingĀ assistance, and center/department policy information; answers to questionsĀ relativeĀ to specific research projects.Ā 
  • Work with evaluation professional(s) to advise and implement evaluation methodologies to assess center/department effectiveness.Ā 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.Ā

COREĀ COMPETENCIES:Ā 

  • Perform specialized lab techniques, including (but not limited to) Mass Spectrometry, proteinĀ isolationĀ and purification.Ā ExpertiseĀ in proteomics data analysis is aĀ plus.Ā 
  • Ā Skill in the operation ofĀ a mass spectrometer, preferablyĀ ThermoĀ instrumentsĀ (i.e.Ā anĀ Oribtrap), Windows-basedĀ computersĀ and related software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).Ā 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.Ā 
  • Ability toĀ establishĀ and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff,Ā studentsĀ and external entities.Ā 
  • Ability to plan,Ā organizeĀ and coordinate work with others.Ā 
  • Ā Ability to multi-task efficiently.Ā

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Ā 

PhD Degree in relatedĀ fieldĀ (Biological Sciences/Chemistry, Biochemistry) and 5 years of related work experience.Ā Ā Ā
