Unit DescriptionThe Newborn Nursey Assistant is responsible for basic patient care, under the supervision of an RN or LVN, in the newborn nursey and Family Care unit
Reports to:
Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:
• Provide mother to be care as well as nursing care for pregnancy and medical surgical patients and newborns
• Assist with newborn hearing screenings and procedures
• Maintain inventory of equipment, supplies, and data entry and collection
• Perform EKGs to report changes in patient conditions
• All other assigned duties related to assistance in the Newborn Nursery
Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• +6 months prior experience working in patient care
Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations
• Basic Life Support certification within 90 days of hire into the role
• Completion of Nurse Aide certification. PCA, or PCT certification will be accepted in lieu

JOB SUMMARY:
The Patient Care Assistant will perform tasks which involve specified services for patients delegated by the Licensed Nurse and are in alignment with the PCA TPP. Blood draws and foley discontinuation completion documentation must be maintained annually to continue receiving differential. Has a working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.

JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Clinical Standards
• Quality Patient Care- Provide quality patient care adhering to safety
practices and proper clinical documentation. Quickly adjusts to
quality initiatives and change. Contributes to the success of the
nursing and unit specific strategic plans.
• Reporting Documentation
• Hospital Wide Quality Metrics
o Inpatient Satisfaction “Likelihood to Recommend" (Non-nursing
department use house wide score; Nursing units use
department specific score)
o NRC: Ambulatory Surgery - Departments use specific results
(OPS, GI, Cath, and IR)
o NRC: Individual Department results
• Quality Measurement: Did staff wash their hands?
• Stewardship- Cost Center actual expenses in comparison to flex
budget
• Delegation- Makes licensed and unlicensed assignments according
to the Nurse Practice Act and UMC Policies
• Identification of Problems, Issues and Trends- Analyzes actual or
potential barriers to help identify problems, issues and trends
• Patient Flow- Manages patient flow for maximum efficiency and
notifies internal resources of changes

III. Patient Safety and Quality Outcomes (NDNQI quality data – Units that do not monitor specific indicators will use the hospital wide scoring for the year)

• Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)
• Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A nurse aide or certified nurse aide who has completed the patient care assistant course at University Medical Center or a patient care technician (PCT) who has completed the national PCT course and is certified.
REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:
PCT certification is required if applicant is external and directly applying for a PCA position.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS:
This position requires close interaction with other ancillary departments in order to facilitate a quality multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:
Work is of medium demand. Standing, walking most of the time on duty. Lifting and pushing patients, carts and wheelchairs. Good tactile sensations necessary for checking patients. Talking and hearing to converse with patients’ staff members. Near visual acuity for reading of gauges and thermometers and for recording on patients' charts.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works inside. Hours of duty may be irregular with covering various shifts. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is of high risk.
