Data Center Chief EngineerĀ

What this Job involves:Ā 

This positionĀ is responsible forĀ managing a team of data center engineers at a large hyperscale data center campus. The role focuses on ensuring safe and efficient operations,Ā maintainingĀ siteĀ equipmentĀ and maintaining 100% uptime. The right person willĀ demonstrateĀ expertiseĀ in one specific area while being multi-skilled in others to successfully complete daily work assignments.Ā

Your day-to-day tasks will include:Ā 

People ManagementĀ 

  • Ensure your team is completing training as assigned.Ā Ā 

  • Manage day-to-day HR issues,Ā escalatingĀ as necessary.Ā Ā 

  • PerformanceĀ manageĀ direct reports through the JLLĀ Quality Conversations process.Ā 

  • Maintain a schedule of Sync meetings with direct reports.Ā Ā 

  • At a minimum,Ā discussingĀ areas for the employee to improve on and areas where the employee is meeting/exceeding expectations.Ā 

  • Write and deliver both the annual performance review and rating.Ā 

  • Participate inĀ performanceĀ rating calibration process.Ā Ā 

  • Participate in the hiring process.Ā Ā 

  • EnsureĀ siteĀ hasĀ appropriate shiftĀ coverage toĀ maintainĀ all critical environment spaces.Ā Ā 

SafetyĀ 

  • Complete hazard assessments as necessaryĀ 

  • Comply withĀ all safety procedures,Ā maintainingĀ good housekeeping and safety work areas. Recognize danger and safety hazards and propose methods toĀ eliminateĀ them.Ā Ā 

  • Maintain complianceĀ withĀ all local AHJ ordinance, codes, and laws.Ā Ā 

  • Complete all required safetyĀ trainingĀ as scheduled.Ā Ā 

OperationsĀ 

  • Oversee and implement the MOP creation process.Ā Ā 

  • Operate andĀ maintainĀ the critical equipment to ensure the campus achieves 100% uptime, whileĀ maintainingĀ concurrently maintainable status.Ā Ā 

  • Coordinate with planner scheduler to complete all preventative and corrective maintenance.Ā Ā 

  • Utilize manufacturer operations manuals (O&Ms) to help create and implement trainingĀ curriculaĀ for the stie operations teams to include:Ā 

  • Ā Electrical distribution equipment such as: Emergency Generators, HV/MV/LV switchgears, Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS), Battery Energy Storage Uninterruptible Power Supplies (BESSUPS), Power Distribution Units (PDUs), Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), or any other needed systems.Ā 

  • Mechanical plant equipment such as: Air Cooled Chiller plant, Fan Walls, Computer Room Air Conditioning/Handler (CRAC/CRAH),Ā Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU), Direct Expansion Units (DX), Make-up Air Units (MUA), Dedicated Outside Air Supply (DOAS),Ā Exhaust fans, etc.Ā 

  • ControlsĀ and Network systems: BMS and EPMS systems, internal networks, and system telemetry flows,Ā BACNetĀ andĀ ModBusĀ communications protocols.Ā Ā 

  • Perform assigned facility inspections and due diligence efforts,Ā reporting onĀ as found conditionsĀ impactingĀ satisfactory client occupancy and operations.Ā Ā 

Incident ManagementĀ 

  • Be the first point of contact for service impacting events involving the mechanical plant.Ā 

  • AssistĀ the team in troubleshooting and mitigating incidents.Ā Ā 

  • AssistĀ in the creation of root cause analysis (RCAs).Ā 

  • Participate in RCA presentations to the customer management team.Ā Ā 

  • Be available for after-hoursĀ supportĀ regardingĀ the mechanical plant.Ā Ā 

  • This includesĀ 24x7Ā response.Ā 

AdministrativeĀ 

  • UtilizeĀ Corrigo (CMMS) for all work performed.Ā Ā 

  • Ensure prompt andĀ accurateĀ work order updates.Ā Ā 

  • Escalate any customerĀ impactingĀ incident’sĀ in accordance withĀ contract SLAs.Ā 

  • Attend any work or safety meetings asĀ required.Ā Ā 

  • Any and allĀ otherĀ duties asĀ assigned by your manager.Ā Ā 

Physical Work requirementsĀ 

  • Lifting upĀ to 80 lbs.  

  • Working from heights.  

  • Frequently climbing, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, and working/extending overhead.  

  • Working in adverse conditions (i.e., extreme cold, extreme hot).  

  • Driving forĀ long periodsĀ of time.  

  • Climbing a ladder with a 300Ā lbĀ weight limit while carrying a tool bag weighing approximately 20 lbs.  

  • Climbing a ladder up to 30 feet.  

Desired experience and technical skills -   

Required:   

  • 4+ years of technical experience in building engineering with a strong background in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and production equipment repair and maintenance   

  • Experience working in Data Centers/Raised Floor Environment   

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills   

  • Universal EPA 608 Certification   

  • Licenses as required by authority havingĀ jurisdiction   

  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and ExcelĀ as well as Google Suite applications.Ā 

  • 2 years of trades school or documented apprenticeship in relevant craft skills  

  • ValidĀ driversĀ licenseĀ 

Ā 

Preferred:   

  • ExpertiseĀ in one specific craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations, Material Handling Equipment)   

  • Familiarity with building automation systems and fire/life safety systems
