Job Description

About the Team:

The Database Prin. Engineer is a key member of the database engineering team responsible for designing, architecting, implementing, and maintaining database management systems and cloud based data infrastructure for assigned clients. The role requires a broad understanding of industry best practices, modern data platform architectures, and multiple database technologies, including SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and AWS Cloud database services.

The engineer operates independently to deliver high quality solutions across multiple engagements, applying strong technical judgment to implement database platforms that meet business, performance, and security requirements. Responsibilities include designing and deploying Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL solutions, as well as leveraging AWS native services such as Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Document DB, Redshift, and AWS DMS/SCT for cloud migrations and modernization initiatives.

About the Role:

The role applies database engineering methodologies, company standards, and leading practices to deliver functional and technical solutions for moderately complex infrastructure and application projects. The engineer may lead solution design and implementation efforts, ensuring high quality, integrated outcomes within time and budget constraints. The position may also serve as a team lead, providing coaching, guidance, and technical escalation support for engineering and operations teams.

The engineer collaborates effectively with infrastructure leadership, participates in business development activities, and contributes to the development of detailed technical and architectural solutions for moderately complex projects.

Additionally, the role supports and guides the database operations team to ensure the performance, availability, integrity, and security of Invesco’s database environment—continuously improving customer experience and enabling enhanced business capabilities.

Responsibilities of the Role:

  • Support database engineering initiatives and contribute to project delivery and platform enhancements.
  • Implement, maintain, and support SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments, ensuring availability, security, performance, and reliability.
  • Follow established database standards, best practices, and operational procedures.
  • Assist with performance tuning, query optimization, schema changes, and database troubleshooting.
  • Participate in resolving database incidents and support root cause analysis activities.
  • Support cloud adoption and migration efforts to AWS using tools such as DMS and SCT, as well as services including RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and related platforms.
  • Assist in improving system reliability through automation, monitoring, patching, and maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, application, and security teams to support secure, scalable, and resilient database solutions.
  • Participate in on-call support and operational activities as required.

Requirements of the Role:

  • 2-4 years of experience supporting and administering SQL Server and PostgreSQL database environments.
  • Working knowledge of high availability and disaster recovery concepts, including Always On Availability Groups, replication, backups, recovery processes, and Aurora capabilities.
  • Experience supporting database migrations and modernization initiatives in AWS environments, including RDS and Aurora.
  • Proficiency with SQL Server technologies, including T-SQL development, database administration, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with scripting or automation tools such as PowerShell, Python, Terraform, or similar technologies.
  • Understanding of database platform operations across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and troubleshooting tools such as CloudWatch, Splunk, or equivalent platforms.
  • Knowledge of source control, automation, and DevOps practices, including Git and infrastructure-as-code concepts.
  • Ability to analyze technical issues and implement effective solutions under guidance when required.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new technologies and processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with team members across multiple technical disciplines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, stakeholders, and business partners.
  • Demonstrates initiative and a continuous improvement mindset
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Formal training in SQL Server and PostgreSQL technologies preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and AWS cloud database services including Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and Redis Cache.
  • Exposure to cloud-native and NoSQL technologies such as DynamoDB and DocumentDB is a plus.
  • Relevant database or cloud certifications are desirable but not required
  • AWS Cloud and PostgreSQL database certification is required.
