Position Summary  

 

Join Cranston, an HFW partner firm, as a Survey Crew Chief. In this key field leadership role, you will oversee survey operations, ensuring the collection of accurate field data to support design, construction, and boundary projects. You will be responsible for supervising crew members, using modern survey equipment, ensuring safety compliance, and coordinating with project managers and engineers. Your precision, technical skill, and leadership will be vital in delivering high-quality survey results that support our firm’s mission of community development.

Essential Responsibilities:   

  • Direct daily activities of the survey crew in the field. 
  • Operate GPS, total stations, and data collectors to gather accurate field data. 
  • Ensure survey data quality and field notes are complete and accurate. 
  • Interpret construction plans, boundary documents, and topographic mapping. 
  • Determine project team makeup and assign workloads. 
  • Conduct project kick-off meetings to communicate and obtain agreement on project schedules. 
  • Communicate daily with office staff and project managers. 
  • Maintain safety standards and promote a safety-first crew environment 
  • Train junior crew members and support their development. 
  • Manage and maintain survey equipment and supplies. 
  • Monitor and follow up on client invoicing and payments. 

 

Qualifications:   

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Experience: 5+ years in land surveying, with 2+ years in a lead field role. 
  • Skills: Strong communication, field problem-solving, and team leadership skills 
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with Trimble or Leica systems and data collection software. 
  • Licenses: Valid Driver’s License. 

Education and Experience 

  • Degree: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s or technical degree a plus. 
  • Certification: Required NSPS Certified or LSIT: Preferred RLS 

Physical Requirements 

  • General: Ability to stand, walk, use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • Lifting: Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and infrequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Vision: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
