Description

Job Summary

A Substitute Teacher serves in place of a classroom teacher on a day-to-day basis, covering absences as needed. Responsibilities include following the provided lesson plans, maintaining classroom management, and supporting student learning and safety throughout the assignment. The Substitute Teacher works closely with school staff to ensure students stay on track. This position reports to the principal.


Ministerial Character

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. Pastors, presidents, and principals serve as leaders of the schools, making Christ's mission present and enduring in them. To fulfill Christ's mission, the school leaders employ suitable collaborators, share it with them, and entrust them with various responsibilities. 


Positions employed in this School help extend the ministry of the School leaders in particular ways as outlined in the job description. The employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the School leaders in the performance of their ministry and, therefore, engages in ministry for the Church.


Essential Duties

  • Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Support and adhere to the Standards of Conduct and to the school's policies and procedures.
  • Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Practice positive, consistent discipline in classroom management.
  • Maintain student safety and supervision throughout the assigned period.
  • Communicate any significant behavioral or safety concerns to school staff or administration.
  • Maintain a professional and orderly classroom environment for the duration of the assignment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Knowledge of child development, learning, and behavior appropriate to the assigned grade level.
  • Skill in managing student behavior and maintaining classroom order.
  • Skill in following provided instructional plans and materials.
  • Skill in demonstrating professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school matters.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to work well with others in the school community.
  • Ability to adapt to different classroom settings and grade levels as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications


Education: High school diploma or equivalent. 

Experience: None required.

Certifications and Training:

  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.
  • Must meet staff development guidelines as set forth by the Diocese and school administration.
  • Compensation

Flat daily rate of $140. Rate is prorated for half-day or partial-day assignments.


Working Conditions

  • All employees of the school are engaged in ministry and closely tied to the principal in the exercise of the principal's ministry and obligations to the school.
  • The school is an at-will employer.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment with priorities and plans that may change rapidly.
  • Assignments are day-to-day and scheduled on an as-needed basis; hours and frequency are not guaranteed.
  • Will be exposed to religious ceremonies, conduct, and speech, including Christian prayer and Catholic liturgical celebrations. Staff meetings and other functions may open and close with Christian prayer.
  • Will be required to adhere to established dress codes and conduct standards.
  • All buildings and vehicles owned by the school are tobacco-free.
  • May be required to use personal or school vehicles to drive to off-site locations.
  • Will be required to work in multiple educational settings and grade levels as assigned.
