Fisheries fieldworker in Region 5 (Yellowstone, Musselshell, Bighorn, Stillwater, Clarks Fork Yellowstone, Boulder Drainages), Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains, Pryor Mountains, and Crazy Mountains.

Specific Job Information:

The majority of the work will be in Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness for mountain lakes fisheries sampling including native and non-native sportfish, with a typical work week consisting of 4 days and 3 nights of backpacking. When not in the back country, a typical work week will be 3 to 5 days of field work to evaluate environmental conditions and fish populations in streams, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in Region 5 with an emphasis on prairie streams. Additionally, personnel may necropsy fish and assess gut contents, assess potential spawning habitat, and provide information regarding access and camping. Personnel will use various fisheries techniques including gill nets, seines, electrofishing, traps, and angling to sample, identify, and collect fish weight, length, and aging structures. Occasional office work for gear maintenance and data entry will also be required. Must be able to hike long distances (up to 10 miles per day) over uneven ground with gear and packs that may exceed 60 pounds in diverse (and sometimes inclement) weather conditions. Knowledge of camping and backpacking, fish identification, angling experience, and the ability to read and interpret maps is a plus. The incumbent must be a good team member, able to take directions, occasionally work independently, and be willing to work at times in remote locations.



Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

Needs to be actively enrolled in a college. Minimum GPA of 2.75 is preferred in a major such as Biology, Fish and Wildlife, Outdoor Recreation, or Environmental Science.
