Working hours are from 2:00 - 6:30 pm. This may include a wide variety of responsibilities including supervision of childcare staff and participants, weekly preparation of lesson plans and newsletters, communication with participants, parents, school personnel, and the Recreation Supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily and demonstrate the District’s core competencies consisting of integrity/ethics, job knowledge, interpersonal skills, policies & procedures compliance, work quality, risk management/safety, District/Department vision and values, adaptability/flexibility, dependability, teamwork, and productivity. Essential Duties o Lead and supervise children in areas of arts and crafts, outdoor recreation, sports, games, enrichment activities, and field trips. o Keep an open relationship with parents to keep them updated on any concerns or problems that may arise with their child. o Use appropriate discipline and language with program participants. o Greet children and parents in a warm and friendly manner. o Help shy children find an area of interest and have patience with distressed children, utilize positive reinforcement techniques. o Plan, organize, coordinate, and lead a multi-recreational program for children 5 years of age up to the 6th grade during program hours. o Plan and coordinate weekly activities for the program. o Track and document attendance. o Maintain accurate, updated records on each child and any other information that is required. Protect the confidentiality of this information. o Meet weekly with Recreation Supervisor to assess program. o Have individual conversations with children during class, sit and interact with children daily. o Prioritize and assign job duties for leaders. o Oversee the staff at each site and take care of any concerns or discipline actions that arise. Complete performance reviews at the end of the season for each staff member for your site. o Make daily safety checks of the facilities, equipment, and supplies. o Equipment and supplies are inventoried each day and replacements are requested in a timely manner. o Provide relevant and timely on the job training to Kids Squad on a monthly basis. Customer Service o Develop a thorough understanding of the Park District’s policies and operations and enforce them in a positive manner. o Monitor health of all participants; be aware and prepared to deal with emergency health issues in accordance with Park District policies. Special sanitation procedures are to be taken in the event of some illnesses. Initiative o Tackle problems and take independent action, seek out new responsibilities, act on opportunities, generate new ideas, practice self-development. Co-operation & Attitude o Present a good personal appearance; wear proper uniform. o Maintain an enthusiastic and positive attitude. Work as part of a team and motivate others. o Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice. Communication o Use appropriate time keeping method/system to accurately record time worked in accordance with policy/procedure. Sign and timely submit time card to Recreation Supervisor. Teamwork o Handle delegation from supervisor with a positive attitude. o Attend all monthly staff meetings, planning team meetings, classroom set-up and clean-up. Equipment o Equipment and supplies are organized and stored properly. Training o Assist Recreation Supervisor with yearly training/orientation prior to the start of Kids Squad for the school year.   QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and demonstrate the competencies listed above in addition to the following: - Minimum of two years of experience working with children 5 years of age through the 6th grade with one year of supervisory experience strongly preferred. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills - Ability to interact positively with parents, participants, businesses, organizations, civic groups and fellow staff members. - Strong understanding of Park District policies and procedures. - Knowledge of computer software programs such as Microsoft Office and the Internet. - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules. - Ability to write routine reports and correspondences and to speak effectively before groups of participants or employees of organization. - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. - Ability to identify and respond quickly to emergency situations. - Ability to effectively adjust to stressful situations (i.e. disputes between participants). - Ability to effectively problem solve and adapt to change. Education & Training - Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required. - Associate Degree from an accredited university with a concentration in education preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Obtain and maintain first-aid certification within one year of employment. - Obtain and maintain adult CPR/AED certification within one year of employment. - Obtain and maintain infant/child CPR/AED certification within one year of employment.
