- Under general supervision performs all duties/responsibilities of a Fleet Services Technician-Class III as well as, technical/skilled inspection, diagnosis, modification, repair & preventive maintenance on complex automotive, light truck & special equipment.
- Performs technical and skilled inspection, diagnosis, modification, repair and preventive maintenance on all EMS vehicles including ambulances, vans, cushmans, buses, marine engines, various makes/model of special use vehicles & all other related Fleet support equipment.
- Diagnoses and repairs transmission, fuel, air conditioning coolant, brake, electrical, suspension & steering system. Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance & bumper to bumper analysis as required by EMS Fleet Mgmt procedures.
- Performs analysis/diagnosis/repair on vehicles involving safety related equipment i.e., anti-lock brake system, air bags, electronic warning systems within passenger compartment & non-safety related equipment.
- Repairs/rebuilds/replaces chassis body components performs engine and transmission/transaxle repairs. Operates dept light truck vehicles & automotive equipment as necessary, including ramp trucks, tow trucks, snow removal and specialty equipment, as is required.  Maintains/cleans garage and workspace areas.
- May supervise Fleet Technicians of a lower grade; assists FST - Class I, as needed.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have at least 4 years of full-time/equivalent part-time paid experience as an auto/light truck mechanic working on a broad range of commonly know light/heavy duty mechanized equipment.Â
- Must possess a US Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Technician’s Certificate for R-12 & 132A systems & a valid Mass, Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
- Must conform to the dept’s Fleet Services personnel tool requirements.Â
- A copy of the RMV driving record will be required.
- Good Knowledge of: The theories principles and practices of automotive & light truck diagnostics/preventive maintenance procedures, occupational hazards, safety equipment, electrical systems, including alternator, starter, battery; electronic systems, emissions testing / performance, use of tools and fasteners, heat/air conditioning systems, suspension & steering, engine performance, major engine repair, major transmission/transaxle, light duty diesel repair, towing procedures, warranty repair, preventive maintenance procedures, compressed natural gas (CNG), Supplemental Restraint Systems, oxygen & acetylene welding, EMS/Fleet maintenance operations.
- Considerable skill in the use of: all tools and fasteners and related equipment of the trade, including but not limited to: Engine Analyzers, Engine Scanners, (GM Tech I, GM Tech II, Snap-On MT2500) Starting and Charging Systems Analyzer, digital voltmeter, ammeter, brake lathe, press & other available machine shop equipment, etc.
- Considerable ability to: read & understand automotive manuals/publications written or digital; use electrical, air driven manual equipment & related tools of the trade with necessary dexterity, coordination, sight & strength; to perform all duties as outlined in “Duties and Responsibilities”; diagnose/repair light/heavy truck & auto equipment incl. specialty vehicles/equipment & assist FST - Class III in selected areas, as required.
- Working Conditions: Works indoors/outdoors in all types of weather; may be exposed to grease, oil, dirt, rain, snow & hazardous materials; works on running engines & under/over equipment; works nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled.
