Job Description:

Our Opportunity

Chewy is seeking a Software Engineer II to build and operate large-scale foundational platforms that power customer experiences, enterprise applications, and partner integrations. You’ll develop highly available backend services, reusable APIs, and event-driven systems that support business-critical workflows and high-volume transactions across Chewy.

As part of our engineering organization, you’ll collaborate with engineers, architects, product managers, and partner teams to deliver scalable services in an Agile environment. You’ll own features from implementation through deployment and into production support, with guidance from experienced engineers and opportunities to contribute to technical design.

What You'll Do:

  • Build and enhance backend services and shared platform capabilities with Java, Spring Boot, and AWS.
  • Develop and maintain APIs and event-driven integrations for customer applications, internal services, and partner platforms.
  • Collaborate with product managers and engineering partners to clarify requirements, define service contracts, and deliver solutions.
  • Contribute to technical designs that address scalability, security, performance, and failure handling.
  • Write clean, maintainable code with automated tests that cover service behavior, integrations, and failure scenarios.
  • Participate in design discussions and code reviews, incorporating feedback and sharing your perspective.
  • Use logs, metrics, and traces to troubleshoot production issues and improve service reliability.
  • Take ownership of assigned features throughout development, deployment, and post-launch monitoring.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, incident investigations, and improvements to prevent recurring issues.
  • Maintain documentation for APIs, service behavior, and operational procedures.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools where appropriate, and review generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.

What You'll Need:

You are a hands-on backend engineer who enjoys building reliable services and solving distributed systems problems. You know how to design clear APIs, work with data and asynchronous events, and handle failures across service dependencies. You take ownership of your work, contribute to design discussions, and collaborate effectively with other engineers and partner teams. You care about code quality, automated testing, security, and the performance of your services in production.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience developing backend software.
  • Experience building services using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing, building, and consuming APIs, including RESTful services.
  • Understanding of microservices and distributed systems fundamentals, including retries, timeouts, idempotency, and partial failures.
  • Experience working with relational or NoSQL databases and an understanding of data modeling.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services or a comparable cloud platform.
  • Familiarity with asynchronous messaging and event-driven systems.
  • Experience writing automated unit and integration tests.
  • Familiarity with source control, code reviews, and CI/CD practices.
  • Experience troubleshooting applications using logs, metrics, and monitoring tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical decisions, progress, and risks clearly.

Bonus (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience building reusable platform services consumed by multiple applications or teams, with attention to API compatibility, scalability, and reliability.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL and API schema design.
  • Experience with technologies such as Kafka, SNS/SQS, DynamoDB, Lambda, ECS, or Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with authentication and authorization concepts, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and access controls.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools, with the ability to review and validate generated code.
  • Exposure to integrating backend APIs with AI applications through LLM APIs, tool calling, or Model Context Protocol (MCP), with attention to authorization, input validation, and reliable execution.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code, such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.
