Controls Engineer I – II – III

On-site, Branford, CT (must be willing to relocate to the Bridgeport/Stamford area within one year of the start date)

 About Oxylus Energy

Oxylus Energy is a climate-tech company building solutions that can scale. Our breakthrough electrochemical technology converts carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral fuels and chemicals, reducing the world's dependence on fossil fuels. We are a team of scientists, engineers, and problem solvers working to make that future real.

 Job brief

As Controls Engineer, you will own the electronics, sensing, controls, and automation of our electrolyzer test stations and balance of stack. You will design and build the systems that run our experiments: from selecting sensors and wiring control panels to writing control logic, safety interlocks, and data acquisition software. As we scale, you will integrate our electrolyzer stack with the unit operations around it, such as COâ‚‚ supply and conditioning, gas separation, and water and thermal management.

This is a hands-on role. You will spend real time in the lab building, commissioning, and troubleshooting hardware, working closely with our electrochemists, materials scientists, and mechanical engineers. Our test stations run long experiments with pressurized and hazardous gases, including CO, so reliable automation and robust safety systems are central to this job. We are hiring at the Engineer I, II, or III level, and will match the title to your experience.

What You Will Do

  • Own the design, build, and maintenance of the electronics, sensing, controls, and automation for our test stations and balance of stack.

  • Select and integrate instrumentation, including mass flow controllers, pressure transducers, back-pressure regulators, thermocouples, gas detectors, pumps, valves, and power supplies.

  • Design electrical schematics and control panels, and build, wire, and commission them.

  • Develop control software and logic using PLCs, microcontrollers, Python, or similar platforms, including control loops for flow, pressure, temperature, and current.

  • Design and implement safety systems, including interlocks, alarms, emergency shutdowns, and gas-leak detection, and contribute to hazard and safety reviews.

  • Build reliable data acquisition and logging systems so experiments produce consistent, high-quality data, and support integration with our cloud data infrastructure.

  • Enable unattended, long-duration operation through automated test sequences and remote monitoring.

  • Integrate the electrolyzer stack with other unit operations as we move toward pilot-scale systems.

  • Troubleshoot electrical, sensor, and control issues on test stations, and keep documentation, drawings, and code up to date.

  • At the Engineer III level: set the controls architecture and standards across stations, lead system integration for pilot-scale projects, and mentor other engineers.

Who You Are

  • A degree in Electrical Eng, Mechanical Eng, Chemical Eng, Mechatronics or a related field, with experience matching the level:

    • Engineer I: B.S. with 1-2 years, or M.S. with some relevant experience (internships, co-ops, and hands-on projects count).

    • Engineer II: B.S. with 2-4 years, or M.S. with 1–2 years of relevant experience.

    • Engineer III: B.S. with 4-6 years, M.S. with 2–4 years, or Ph.D. with 0–2 years of relevant experience

  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and wiring electrical and control systems.

  • Experience programming control or data acquisition systems, using PLCs, microcontrollers, Python, or similar tools.

  • Familiarity with industrial instrumentation, sensors, and communication protocols such as Modbus, analog signals, or Ethernet/IP.

  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics and P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams).

  • A strong commitment to safety, especially around pressurized systems and hazardous gases.

  • Highly attentive to detail, with strong problem-solving and organizational skills.

  • Good written, verbal, and presentation skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience automating test stations for electrolyzers, fuel cells, or batteries.

  • Experience integrating potentiostats or high-current DC power supplies.

  • Familiarity with electrical and safety standards such as NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, or UL 508A.

  • Experience with SCADA or HMI development, and with cloud data pipelines.

  • Experience with process control in chemical or gas-handling systems.

Salary

  • Engineer I: USD 80,000 – 90,000 per year base salary commensurate with experience, education, and skills.

  • Engineer II: USD 90,000 – 100,000 per year base salary commensurate with experience, education, and skills.

  • Engineer III: USD 100,000 – 110,000 per year base salary commensurate with experience, education, and skills.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary.

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Paid sick days and vacation

  • 401k match

  • A diverse and inclusive work environment
