 About Oxylus Energy
Oxylus Energy is a climate-tech company building solutions that can scale. Our breakthrough electrochemical technology converts carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral fuels and chemicals, reducing the world's dependence on fossil fuels. We are a team of scientists, engineers, and problem solvers working to make that future real.
Job brief
As Materials Scientist I – II – III/ Materials Engineer I – II – III, you will prepare and characterize Oxylus’ proprietary catalysts, electrodes, membranes, and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), and you will be responsible for ensuring these materials are high quality and reproducible. You will build a deep understanding of how the structure and properties of these materials affect the performance of our CO₂ electrolyzers, and you will use that understanding to develop improved materials. You may also run electrochemical tests on our electrolyzers across a range of operating conditions.
Day to day, you will prepare materials using both established and novel procedures and formulations, then evaluate them in electrochemical tests. You will make sure your work produces consistent, high-quality data, analyze the results, and report findings to project stakeholders. As you grow in the role, you will take on an increasingly important part in experimental design.
What You Will Do
Prepare and characterize Oxylus’ catalysts and electrodes.
Condition ion-exchange membranes.
Develop materials that improve the performance of CO2 electrolyzers.
Maintain and troubleshoot technical equipment and analytical instruments.
Perform electrochemical tests, then analyze and summarize the results.
Use experimental data to guide future experimental plans.
Communicate the status of equipment and test hardware and any issues that arise during experiments.
Document procedures to build shared knowledge across the team.
Prepare presentations and data analyses for the wider technical team.
 Who You Are
B.S./B.A. or equivalent degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field, with experience matching the level:
Engineer I: B.S. with 1-2 years, or M.S. with some relevant experience (internships, co-ops, and hands-on projects count).
Engineer II: B.S. with 2-4 years, or M.S. with 1–2 years of relevant experience.
Engineer III: B.S. with 4-6 years, M.S. with 2–4 years, or Ph.D. with 0-2 years of relevant experience
Hands-on experience preparing or processing carbon-based materials, polymers, ionomers, or membranes in an academic or industrial lab.
Familiarity with common materials preparation methods, such as ink or slurry formulation, mixing and dispersion, spray or blade coating, and hot pressing.
Experience with materials characterization techniques, such as SEM, XRD, BET surface area, TGA, FTIR, or contact-angle measurements, and the ability to interpret the results.
Basic understanding of electrochemistry and how material properties affect device performance.
Experience organizing and analyzing data with Python, MATLAB, Excel, or similar tools.
Safe, careful lab habits, including handling chemicals, solvents, and fine powders.
Highly attentive to detail, with strong organizational skills and a habit of documenting your work.
Good written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Nice to Have
Experience fabricating electrodes, gas diffusion layers, or membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for electrolyzers, fuel cells, or batteries.
Experience synthesizing or depositing catalysts.
Experience running electrochemical tests, such as polarization curves or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
Familiarity with design-of-experiments (DOE) methods.
