POSITION SUMMARY: Assists with patient care based on individual patient needs within scope of practice under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides supportive care to the Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse or physician.  
  2. May perform approved procedures per job description, orientation skills checklist and per policy.
  3. Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a multidisciplinary team member, supports and assists team members in all activities.
  4. Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation and with all co-workers, patients, visitors and physicians.
  5. Recognizes and reports appropriate data to the Registered Nurse.
  6. Assists Registered Nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations and treatment.  
  7. Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice.
  8. Performs other duties as in-service, including crutch walking, dressing changes and assisting physician with splint or cast application.
  9.  Adheres to Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District policies addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
  10. Assists patients from vehicle into wheelchair or on to gurney, as need dictates. Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards. 
  11. Maintains patient comfort and privacy.
  12. Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations. 
  13. Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures. Assists with preparation of equipment for procedures.
  14. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patients served. 
  15. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Monitors stock and restocks supplies as needed
  2. Transports patients when instructed by the Registered Nurse.
  3. Participates in continuing education and department inservice meetings.
  4. Maintains policies and procedures established by the department.
  5. Participates in performance improvement activities.
  6. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservices meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for on-going education.
  7. Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  9. Supports and promotes safety standards, identifies risk situations and intervenes appropriately.
  10. Knowledge and ability to apply ethical and legal principles to practices.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE: 

  1. High school graduate or equivalent. 
  2. Experience in acute hospital setting or in ambulance.
  3. Current BLS certification.

Newborn     Infant/Pediatric      Adolescent      Adult      Geriatric    x All      No Patient Care

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Manual dexterity with fine motor ability to operate and handle equipment used in the department.
  2. Ability to hear spoken words, auscultate physical assessment skills and monitor alarms.
  3. Ability to see written type.
  4. Ability to stand for up to several hours at a time.
  5. Ability to climb stairs.
  6. Must be able to lift 25 pounds and able to perform tasks of lifting, turning, and transferring patients.
  7. Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.
