POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Safety Manager is an experienced, part-time expert dedicated to executing and enhancing the occupational health and safety programs at Second Harvest Heartland. This role focuses on ensuring that all operations adhere to established safety policies and maintain rigorous compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Working closely under the Director of Transportation and Safety, this position acts as the primary driver for on-the-floor safety culture, hazard mitigation, and incident response, bringing seasoned expertise to the warehouse environment without the need for full-time oversight.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain, update, and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to state and federal OSHA guidelines.
  • Prepare and enforce policies that support a culture of health and safety, including all regulations of Minnesota OSHA, Minnesota State Fire Code, and Federal DOT.
  • Develop emergency response programming, including procedure development, training, and awareness building.
  • Support SHH teams and committees including the Safety Committee, Emergency Response Team (EmRT), and others focused on life safety.
  • Evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and adherence to established safety standards;assist in updating standards as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver training, presentations, and toolbox talks across a wide variety of safety topics.
  • Monitor compliance with policies and regulations by reviewing employee activities and overall operations.
  • Assist with equipment and machinery inspections to identify, document, report, and follow up on potential unsafe conditions and corrective actions.
  • Investigate accidents or incidents to discover root cause and partner with HR to handle worker's compensation claims.
  • System Administration: act as the primary administrator for all safety management and training software, taking full ownership of accurate data entry, user management, system optimization, and troubleshooting to eliminate historical administrative bottlenecks.
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities, or new prevention measures.
  • Report on safety issues and statistics.
  • Maintain comprehensive safety documentation and record-keeping.
  • Provide high-level safety advice and mentoring to staff, management, and contractors while promoting general safety awareness.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep understanding of legal safety guidelines (state and federal).
  • Data analysis and risk assessment experience/skills.
  • Warehouse material handling and general warehouse equipment operation experience.
  • Experience overseeing safety management and training software.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, produce reports, and develop relevant policies and processes.
  • Excellent organizational and motivational skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • CFSP Certified through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
  • Safety equipment experience.
  • Warehouse material handling and general warehouse equipment operation experience.
  • Food handling experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience working effectively with a broad range of individuals.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability.
  • Experience onboarding new employees in regard to safety practices.
