Position Summary

The Senior Buyer is responsible for managing purchasing activities, supplier relationships, negotiations, contracts, and material availability to support production, new product development, and special projects. This role will work closely with leadership, operations, engineering, production, and suppliers to ensure materials are purchased effectively, costs are controlled, and delivery schedules are met.


This position reports to a Vice President.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform purchasing activities to maintain inventory at target levels.
  • Manage material purchasing activities with external suppliers.
  • Ensure purchased products stay within budget for production, new product development, and special projects.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers and critical vendor partners.
  • Improve purchasing and sourcing methods, especially related to electronics, engineering, and production needs.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary costs and improve overall purchasing efficiency.
  • Improve lead times and coordination with NPD, traffic, operations, and other internal teams to support delivery schedules and prevent service delays.
  • Identify new suppliers and negotiate terms, supply agreements, rebates, discounts, and other cost-saving opportunities.
  • Evaluate sourcing options using available systems, procedures, and market resources.
  • Partner with leadership to support purchasing goals, operational targets, and business needs.
  • Maintain awareness of procurement, materials, inventory, and planning concepts.
  • Negotiate and finalize supplier agreements for materials and services.
  • Apply and understand MRP, MPS, BOMs, routes, part numbers, and related planning data.
  • Verify accuracy of BOMs, part numbers, part costs, and data included in MRP.
  • Keep purchasing records, agreements, and related documentation updated.
  • Manage handling costs, incoming freight, and related purchasing expenses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, manufacturing, finance, supply chain, or a related field preferred.
  • 10+ years of purchasing, sourcing, procurement, or supply chain experience.
  • Experience working in a company with $100M+ in sales preferred.
  • Strong negotiation and contract experience required.
  • Experience purchasing materials for manufacturing, electronics, engineering, production, or related environments preferred.
  • Strong understanding of MRP, MPS, BOMs, routes, part numbers, supplier agreements, and inventory planning.
  • Ability to build strong supplier relationships and negotiate cost, quality, delivery, and service terms.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with leadership, operations, engineering, production, traffic, and suppliers.
