The Group Exercise Instructor instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within the class. Modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; required.
  • Minimum age of 18; required.
  • YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certification or National certification in group fitness instruction (e.g., ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM); is required.
  • Certification in area of expertise; required.
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification; required.
  • YMCA Healthy Living Online Certification completion within 60 days of hire.
  • At least one year of experience teaching group exercise classes; preferred.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Lead energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals. 
  2. Ask and answer questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being. 
  3. Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  4. Build effective, authentic relationships with members; help members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  5. Observe and adjust approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  6. Celebrate achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  7. Keep accurate class attendance records.
  8. Attend all staff meetings and approved trainings as required.
  9. Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to conduct classes and activities.

Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.

Work schedule will include daytime, evening and weekend hours and ability to travel to all program activity sites.

ALL POSITIONS REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING CLEARANCES FOR EMPLOYMENT PURPOSES PRIOR TO THE DATE OF HIRE. CLEARANCES ARE ACCEPTED WITHIN 2 YEARS OF THE HIRE DATE. EMPLOYEES MAY BE COMPENSATED UP TO $50.00 FOR CLEARANCES (WITH A RECEIPT) ONCE THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD HAS BEEN PASSED.
