Title: ITSM Automation & Optimization Leader (ITIL Expert)

Northern Trust is seeking aĀ senior ITSM leader and ITIL expertĀ to lead theĀ automation, optimization, and maturation of ITĀ ServiceĀ ManagementĀ processes. This role is accountable for transforming how IT services are governed, executed, and continuously improved—shifting from manual, compliance-heavy processes toĀ automated, data-driven, and resilient ITSM operations.Ā 

This is a highly visible leadership role balancingĀ ā€œrun-the-bankā€stabilityĀ withĀ ā€œchange-the-bankā€ transformation, requiring strong ITIL judgment, deep automation acumen, and the ability to influence across global technology teams.Ā 

WhatĀ You’llĀ Do:Ā 

ITSM Process Leadership & Optimization:Ā 

  • Interface with senior executives across the organization toĀ drive strategic outcomesĀ and day-to-dayĀ service deliveryĀ prioritiesĀ to deliverĀ operational excellenceĀ andĀ enableĀ risk reduction.Ā 

  • Serve as theĀ enterprise authority on ITIL-basedĀ processes and capabilities, ensuring processes are fit-for-purpose, scalable, and aligned to business risk.Ā 

  • Lead continuous optimization of ITSM processes, reducing friction, manual effort, and cycle time while improving quality and compliance.Ā 

  • Define and enforceĀ clear process guardrails, decision frameworks, and risk-based controls across global teams.Ā 

Automation & Intelligent Enablement:Ā 

  • Drive anĀ automation-first strategyĀ forĀ ITSM practices,Ā leveragingĀ AI, orchestration, and workflow automation to:Ā Ā 

  • Reduce human dependency and errorĀ 

  • Increase standardization and predictabilityĀ 

  • Enable safe, fast, and repeatable change executionĀ 

  • Partner with engineering, platform, and tooling teams to embed automation directly into ITSM workflows and deployment pipelines.Ā 

  • IdentifyĀ and retire low-value manual controls, replacing them withĀ preventative and detective automated controls.Ā 

Metrics, Insights & Value Realization:Ā 

  • Define and operationalizeĀ KPIs, KRIs, and experience metricsĀ that measure effectiveness, risk reduction, and business value.Ā 

  • SponsorĀ dashboardĀ creationĀ and automated reporting thatĀ provideĀ real-time visibility into performance, compliance, and trends.Ā 

  • Use data and insights to continuously refine process design and automation priorities.Ā 

Collaboration & Influence:Ā 

  • Act as a trusted advisor to technology, risk, audit, and business stakeholders.Ā 

  • Facilitate global forums, workshops, and working groups to drive alignment, adoption, and continuous improvement.Ā 

  • Mentor and develop ITSM practitioners, raising overall process and automation maturity across the organization.Ā 

Who You Are:Ā 

You are aĀ seasoned ITSM leader and ITIL practitionerĀ with a passion forĀ process excellence, intelligent automation, and scalable governance. You bring strong judgment, a systems-thinking mindset, and the ability to translate ITIL principles into practical, modern operating models.Ā 

You are equally comfortable:Ā 

  • Challenging legacy processesĀ 

  • Designing future-state workflowsĀ 

  • Influencing senior stakeholdersĀ 

  • And delivering measurable, sustainable outcomesĀ 

Qualifications:Ā 

  • 10+ years of IT Service Management experience, ideally within Banking or Financial Services.Ā 

  • Deep, hands-onĀ expertiseĀ inĀ ITIL/ITSM, including governance, risk-based decisioning, and continuous improvement.Ā 

  • Proven experience leadingĀ automation and optimization initiativesĀ within ITSM environments.Ā 

  • Strong understanding ofĀ ITIL, COBIT, ISO/IEC 20000, and regulated operating environments.Ā 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead globally and influence outcomes without direct authority.Ā 

  • Excellent communication, analytical, and stakeholder management skills.Ā 

Preferred Certifications:Ā 

  • ITIL Certification (Intermediate or higher strongly preferred)Ā 

  • Automation, AI/ML, or RPA-related certificationsĀ

Salary Range:

$137,400 - 240,400 USD

Salary range is a good faith estimate of base pay. Northern Trust provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement benefits (401k and pension), health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, spending accounts and disability), paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life & accident insurance, and other voluntary and well-being benefits. Northern Trust also provides a discretionary bonus program that may include an equity component.
