About the Role:

As a Hospice Physician, you will play a critical role in providing compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals facing life-limiting illnesses. Your primary focus will be to manage and alleviate pain and other distressing symptoms, ensuring the highest quality of life for patients in their final stages. You will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams, including nurses, social workers, and chaplains, to develop and implement comprehensive care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs and wishes. This role requires not only clinical expertise but also exceptional communication skills to support patients and their families emotionally and spiritually during challenging times. Ultimately, your work will contribute to a dignified, respectful, and comfortable end-of-life experience for patients across diverse settings within the United States healthcare system.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine or eligibility to obtain certification.
  • Valid and unrestricted medical license to practice in the United States.
  • Demonstrated experience in hospice, palliative, or end-of-life care.
  • Strong knowledge of pain management, symptom control, and ethical considerations in terminal illness.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional training or certification in pain management or geriatrics.
  • Experience working within interdisciplinary hospice teams in diverse care settings.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems used in hospice care.
  • Advanced communication skills training, including delivering difficult news and supporting grieving families.
  • Participation in research or quality improvement projects related to palliative care.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments to evaluate physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs.
  • Develop and oversee individualized hospice care plans that prioritize symptom management and patient comfort.
  • Prescribe and adjust medications to effectively control pain and other symptoms.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary hospice teams to coordinate holistic care and support services.
  • Communicate clearly and empathetically with patients, families, and caregivers regarding prognosis, treatment options, and advance care planning.
  • Provide guidance and education to hospice staff and family members on best practices in end-of-life care.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and ethical standards governing hospice care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and service delivery.

Skills:

The required clinical skills enable the Hospice Physician to accurately assess and manage complex symptoms, ensuring patient comfort and dignity. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for effectively discussing sensitive topics with patients and families, fostering trust and understanding. Collaboration skills are used daily to work seamlessly with multidisciplinary teams, integrating medical, emotional, and spiritual care components. Familiarity with regulatory standards and ethical frameworks guides decision-making and ensures compliance in all aspects of care. Preferred skills such as proficiency with EMR systems and experience in quality improvement enhance efficiency and contribute to continuous advancement of hospice services.
