Transformer Specialist


Saber Power Services, a portfolio company of Greenbelt Capital Partners, is a fully integrated electrical power system services firm providing end-to-end solutions across utility, renewables and battery storage, industrial, petrochemical, and other markets.  Based in Houston, Texas, Saber Power offers deep subject matter expertise and uses an engineering-led approach to designing, installing, testing, and maintaining medium and high-voltage electrical infrastructure. Saber serves clients locally, nationally, and abroad.

 

Position Summary: 

The Transformer Specialist will perform as lead person for hands on transformer field service projects involving installation and assembly of new transformers, power transformer testing, trouble shooting and analysis of transformers, load tap changers and auxiliary devices, oil processing, and transformer field repairs. Candidates must be motivated and require little supervision. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead transformer field service projects. 
  • Hands on participation/ OTJ training of peers on transformer assembly, repair and insulating oil-processing projects. 
  • Perform and evaluate all electrical tests on transformers including Power Factor, TTR, Winding resistance, SFRA, bushing and arrester tests, etc. 
  • Test all auxiliary devices i.e. Tap changers, pressure devices, gauges. 
  • Troubleshoot transformers, load tap changers, auxiliary devices, and analyze laboratory oil test results 
  • Willingness to perform other types of electrical testing and help with other projects. 
  • Maintain strong client relationships, work with inside sales to prepare large project estimates, walk down large projects, expand project work scopes, and assist in capturing extra charges. 
  • Ability to make client technical presentations if needed.

  • SME- Candidate will be a subject matter expert resource for Saber. They must be willing to answer technical questions from peers, estimating, management, etc.  
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.

Qualifications:

  • Education Requirements: 
    1. Graduate of Electrical Technical School or Military equivalent and eight years minimum same or similar work experience. 
    2. High school education or equivalent and 12 years minimum same or similar work experience. 
  • Knowledge of various industry standards, such as NETA, OSHA, IEEE and NFPA. 
  • Must possess background and experience in most types of switchgear testing through the 230 kV class and utility grade power transformers up through 750 KV class. 
  • Good theoretical understanding of electrical power systems, and good aptitude for problem evaluation. 
  • Complete projects consistently on time, under budget and profitable. 
  • Able to write detailed reports and process project billing recaps. 
  • Communicate effectively, writing and verbally, with clients and peers. 
  • Trains other transformer service personnel 
  • Good judgment, dependable, responsible for management of large projects that require good supervisory and organizational skills. 
  • Strong computer skills including editing, formatting and using templates in Microsoft Word, use of Internet for standards/products/manufacturer research. 
  • Must be able to operate automated testing software such as Doble DTAF, Vanguard and Omicron CT testing software, etc. 
  • Working knowledge of Power DB is a plus. 
  • Willing to work flexible hours, weekends, holidays, night work, and callouts. Must be available for out-of-town and international travel of up to several weeks. 
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell. Frequently required to sit, climb and balance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, basic color differentiation and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Frequently lift and/or move 100-pound test sets. 
  • Commercial Driver’s License is a plus, and candidates will be expected to get a Texas CDL if they don’t already hold one.
