JOB SUMMARY
Plans, coordinates, directs, and participates in work of smaller research project or major unit of large research project in field of specialization for which incumbent is particularly qualified in terms of extensive training and/or experience. 

The Krishnan laboratory in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics has an opening for a Research Scientist with expertise in Immunology and Mitochondrial Biology. The Krishnan lab’s mission is to study the inflammatory response in anemia-RBC-transfusion-related comorbidities in premature infants. Current projects in the Krishnan laboratory focus on the molecular biology of hepatic monocyte-related inflammatory responses in murine neonates, with an emphasis on mitochondrial dynamics. The laboratory integrates multiomics-based approaches with investigations of neonatal liver myeloid cell development and hypoxia-related mitochondrial dysfunction, which predispose to RBC-transfusion-related NEC, SIRS, and neuroinflammation. The laboratory uses transgenic animal models combined with bioinformatic approaches to understand the monocyte development that occurs within the hematopoietic niche in the liver under physiological conditions and to determine how these mitochondrial signaling pathways alter innate immunity during anemia-RBC transfusion in murine neonates. The Research Scientist will work under general direction to support the PI's long-term research goals, perform sophisticated procedures to meet project needs by applying high-quality research methods, and improve existing methods as needed.

Duties include planning and conducting experiments, analyzing the research data, co-mentoring staff and assisting the Pl in preparing grant applications, reports, manuscripts, and presentations. Developing innovative protocols and procedures for in-vitro and in-vivo studies related to anemia, RBC transfusion-related inflammatory responses, especially towards the investigation of monocyte development, their ontogeny, and dysregulated hematopoiesis in anemic neonates. Develop the studies related to therapeutic approaches that target hypoxia-inducible factor- 3alpha signaling using knockout mice and generate small molecule inhibitors for the same. Prepare progress reports, protocols, and research manuscripts. Organize and conduct lab group meetings; present research work in lab meetings and UTSW forums; and attend national and international meetings and conferences.

  5 years of research experience in the field of assignment with PhD including 
  2 years at the level of Senior Research Associate or its equivalent or 
  7 years of research experience in the field of assignment with Master's degree including 
  3 years at the level of Senior Research Associate or its equivalent or 
  9 years of research experience in the field of assignment with Bachelor's degree including 
  4 years Level of Senior Research Associate or its equivalent. 
   

JOB DUTIES

Determines specific goals or objectives to be attained. Assigns and reviews work of subordinates. Plans experimental protocols.
• Reviews and analyzes resulting research data. Revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data.
• Compiles, writes, and submits research results to supervisor. Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors.
• Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
• Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
• Supervises group of employees of lower grade engaged in performance of technical and professional work, which vary from routine to complex laboratory work tasks.
• May confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research project.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
