Electrical Engineer – Substation DesignÂ
Position: Full-TimeÂ
Location: Any (Florida and Illinois preferred)
Licensing: Professional Engineer (PE) RequiredÂ
About the RoleÂ
Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer specializing in Substation Design to support power delivery projects for utility, municipal, and industrial clients. This senior-level role is ideal for a licensed Professional Engineer with extensive experience in high-voltage substations, including physical layout, protection and control coordination, and interdisciplinary design integration.Â
The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and direct experience working with transmission and distribution (T&D) utilities or power companies.Â
Key ResponsibilitiesÂ
Substation Engineering & DesignÂ
Lead the design of new, expanded, and upgraded electrical substations (typically 69kV through 500kV).Â
Develop and review substation designs including:Â Â
Physical layouts and general arrangementsÂ
Bus configurations and equipment arrangementÂ
Grounding systems and lightning protectionÂ
Raceway and cable schedulesÂ
Equipment foundations and integration with civil/structural designsÂ
Perform and review electrical calculations, including:Â Â
Ground grid analysisÂ
Short-circuit and relay coordination supportÂ
AC/DC system designÂ
Prepare construction drawings, technical specifications, design reports, and material lists.Â
Protection, Control & Systems CoordinationÂ
Coordinate substation design with protection and control engineers, SCADA, and communications teams.Â
Support breaker, transformer, relay, and protection scheme selection and integration.Â
Ensure designs comply with applicable utility standards and power system requirements.Â
Project Leadership & Technical OversightÂ
Serve as lead engineer or technical authority on substation projects.Â
Provide quality control reviews of drawings, calculations, and specifications.Â
Collaborate with civil, structural, geotechnical, transmission line, and environmental teams.Â
Support project managers with:Â Â
Scope developmentÂ
Cost estimatingÂ
Scheduling and risk identificationÂ
Mentor junior engineers and designers.Â
Industry Tools & StandardsÂ
Apply applicable industry codes and standards, including:Â Â
IEEEÂ
NESCÂ
NFPA (including NEC)Â
ANSIÂ
Utility-specific design criteriaÂ
Utilize industry-standard software and tools, such as:Â Â
AutoCAD or MicroStationÂ
SKM, ETAP, or EasyPowerÂ
Ground grid and fault analysis toolsÂ
Maintain awareness of current substation construction methods, safety requirements, and materials.Â
Client & Field SupportÂ
Work directly with electric utilities, power providers, and industrial clients.Â
Support construction activities through:Â Â
Review of contractor submittalsÂ
Responses to RFIsÂ
Site visits and field observationsÂ
Ensure design intent is effectively communicated and implemented in the field.Â
Required QualificationsÂ
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field.Â
Professional Engineer (PE) license (required at hire).Â
Minimum 8 years of experience in substation or power delivery engineering.Â
Prior experience working with:Â Â
Electric utilitiesÂ
Transmission and distribution companiesÂ
Power industry clientsÂ
Strong understanding of substation equipment, protection philosophies, and utility standards.Â
Proven ability to lead technical tasks and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.Â
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Â
Preferred QualificationsÂ
Experience with EPC or owner engineer utility project delivery models.Â
Experience with HV/EHV substations (230kV and above).Â
Familiarity with relay protection concepts and SCADA integration.Â
Experience developing proposals, cost estimates, and schedules.Â
Prior experience mentoring junior staff or acting in a technical lead role.Â

Salary Range: $147,000-$175,000
