Student Worker - Politics and Government Research Assistant

Purpose/Objective of the Role:
Research assistants will code human rights reports, continuing to build a global dataset on human rights abuses. Project is led by Professor Franklin, with support from a grant from the Centennial Center with the American Political Science Association.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Research Assistants (RAs) will be trained on applying coding schemes to measure the severity and targets of human rights abuses.
- RAs will then use information in human rights reports to code the variables for a wide range of countries.
- RAs will largely work independently at times that fit their schedules but will meet regularly with Prof. Franklin and discuss any questions or difficulties they encounter in the coding process.
- The position could be fall only or extend into spring depending on how long the grant funding holds out.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Current OWU student, sophomore status or higher, preferably majoring in Politics and Government, International Studies, or similar social science field.
- Students must be able to carefully follow directions, work independently and stay on task.
- Students must also attend meetings with professor and communicate any questions or difficulties.
Potential Future Career Benefit:
This position will be very useful to students considering graduate school. RAs will learn about social science research and they will also learn a lot about human rights around the world.
