Job Summary: 

The student writing tutor plays an important role in Delaware University’s mission to advance student success by providing one-on-one writing assistance to undergraduate students who request help with writing assignments. Student writing tutors will apply best practices in writing tutoring learned during training sessions at the beginning and throughout the semester. This position also requires the student writing tutor to document and succinctly summarize each tutoring session. Of course, a writing tutor should have strong writing experience and knowledge; however, as any undergraduate student can walk into the Writing Center and ask for help with any writing assignment, on any writing topic, and at any stage of the writing process, a student writing tutor must be willing and eager to learn new writing skills continuously. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in training at the beginning of the semester and as needed
  • Attend regular Writing Center staff meetings
  • Greet students and help them sign in correctly
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, coworkers, and supervisor
  • Tutor students in writing skills
  • Analyze written work of students and provide suggestions for revisions
  • Explain strategies for editing
  • Help students identify and correct surface-level errors in grammar and punctuation
  • Help students understand and correctly apply documentation systems like APA and MLA
  • Maintain detailed records documenting all tutoring sessions
  • Utilize Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Zoom, Outlook, Word, and other computer applications as needed to fulfill essential job functions
  • Other duties as assigned

Education Employment Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled Delaware Valley University student
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide required documentation to verify identity and employment eligibility
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to create a welcoming, friendly, and positive atmosphere for students
  • Knowledge of MLA and APA documentation systems
  • Experience using Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Zoom, Outlook, Word

Work Environment:

  • Indoor position. Must be able to work scheduled hours (hours vary)
