ABOUT THE POSITION

As a Software Engineer IV in Upbound’s engineering department, specializing in Ruby on Rails, you will play a critical leadership role in defining the technical architecture, evolution, and reliability of our platform services. You will be the technical guide on a team of talented engineers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, fault-tolerant, and secure software solutions while setting engineering standards and aligning cross-team technical strategies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serving as the primary technical guide across the software lifecycle, steering architecture, design decisions, and engineering execution.
  • Architecting and implementing high-throughput, fault-tolerant distributed solutions and APIs primarily using Ruby on Rails.
  • Defining architectural standards, service boundaries, and non-functional requirements (high availability, fault tolerance, observability, and sub-second latency).
  • Partnering closely with delivery managers, product managers, architects, and engineering leadership to break down ambiguous business requirements into executable technical roadmaps.
  • Driving code health, automated testing rigor, and engineering discipline through rigorous code reviews and system architecture reviews.
  • Leading root-cause analysis (RCA) on complex production issues and performance bottlenecks, implementing long-term architectural remediations.
  • Mentoring and coaching mid-level and senior engineers (Engineers II and III) to accelerate their growth and raise the technical bar across the department.
  • Evaluating emerging technologies, architectural patterns, and frameworks to keep Upbound's platform modern and competitive.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in the industry.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, building, and operating mission-critical distributed systems.
  • Deep hands-on expertise in Ruby and Ruby on Rails, with strong knowledge of framework internals, memory profiling, and high-concurrency scaling.
  • Proven track record of architecting scalable distributed systems and resilient microservices.
  • Advanced expertise in relational database architecture, schema optimization, and performance tuning (PostgreSQL), as well as distributed caching and NoSQL databases.
  • Proven experience building cloud-native solutions on AWS utilizing container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Strong mastery of software architecture principles, domain-driven design, and event-driven patterns.
  • Proven track record of technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and influencing architectural decisions across multiple teams.
  • Strong understanding of security best practices, CI/CD pipeline automation, and Agile delivery.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical trade-offs to both technical peers and business stakeholders.

PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred Skill: Elixir – Hands-on experience with or working knowledge of Elixir (Phoenix / BEAM / OTP) in high-throughput or concurrent systems.
  • Deep experience with Apache Kafka or distributed event streaming architectures.
  • Experience in the fintech or financial services sectors (e.g., risk evaluation, underwriting, payment processing, ledger management).
  • Experience with monorepos or cross-service API governance.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

  • Competitive compensation
  • Full health benefits (Medical/Dental/Vision)
  • 401(k) match (5%/4%)
  • DTO (discretionary time off)
  • Health savings account (HSA) with company contribution
  • College tuition reimbursement program (STEM degrees)
