Job DetailsJob Location: ELP - El Paso, TX 79906Position Type: Full TimeSpecific Job Duties Safely operate a Class A commercial motor vehicle, including tractor-trailer combinations, for the transportation of intermodal containers between ports, rail terminals, container yards, warehouses, distribution centers, and customer locations. Pick up and deliver loaded and empty ocean and intermodal containers according to dispatch instructions, appointment schedules, terminal requirements, and customer delivery windows. Report to designated marine terminals, rail ramps, container yards, and other facilities to complete container pickups, deliveries, ingates, outgates, and returns. Verify container numbers, chassis numbers, seal numbers, booking numbers, appointment numbers, and other shipment information before departing a terminal or facility. Inspect containers and chassis for visible damage, defects, structural concerns, tire condition, lights, brakes, air lines, locking mechanisms, and other safety-related issues before transport. Properly connect and secure containers to chassis and verify that all locking devices are fully engaged before moving the equipment. Verify the correct container and chassis are received and delivered and immediately report discrepancies to dispatch or management. Follow all terminal, port, rail, customer, and facility-specific procedures for entering, operating within, and exiting secured facilities. Comply with port and terminal security requirements, including identification, TWIC access requirements, gate procedures, safety rules, and designated traffic routes. Follow appointment systems and terminal operating procedures and communicate delays, missed appointments, rejected ingates/outgates, or other operational issues to dispatch. Obtain and properly process interchange documentation, electronic gate receipts, delivery receipts, equipment condition reports, and other required documentation. Record and report container and chassis interchange condition, including existing damage, new damage, missing equipment, tire issues, lighting defects, or other discrepancies. Take photographs of containers, chassis, seals, damage, or other equipment conditions when required by company procedures, customers, terminals, or dispatch. Verify container seals at pickup and delivery and immediately report missing, broken, damaged, or mismatched seals. Transport containers safely while complying with applicable weight restrictions, bridge laws, axle-weight requirements, route restrictions, and commercial vehicle regulations. Verify that container weight and cargo information is consistent with dispatch documentation and immediately report overweight or questionable loads. Follow all applicable DOT/FMCSA regulations, including hours-of-service, ELD requirements, vehicle inspections, driver qualification, and recordkeeping requirements. Complete accurate pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tractor and chassis/container combination. Maintain accurate ELD records, trip information, fuel records, mileage, inspection reports, and other required documentation. Communicate continuously with dispatch regarding pickup status, delivery status, traffic conditions, terminal delays, equipment issues, and customer requirements. Use company-provided mobile devices, ELDs, GPS systems, dispatch applications, terminal appointment systems, scanners, and other technology as required. Safely maneuver tractor-trailer combinations in congested port and terminal environments, including tight turns, staging lanes, container stacks, gates, rail ramps, warehouses, and customer facilities. Follow designated truck lanes, traffic patterns, speed limits, parking procedures, and safety instructions within ports, terminals, rail facilities, and customer locations. Safely position the tractor and chassis for container loading, unloading, inspection, and interchange activities. Report to the appropriate location for empty-container returns and follow designated steamship line, depot, terminal, or customer instructions. Verify empty containers are accepted at the designated return location and obtain appropriate documentation confirming the return. Coordinate with dispatch when a designated terminal, depot, or customer refuses an empty container or directs the driver to another location. Monitor fuel levels, vehicle condition, and equipment readiness throughout the workday and report maintenance concerns promptly. Safely connect and disconnect chassis air lines and electrical connections when required. Properly operate chassis landing gear, locking pins, twist locks, glad hands, electrical connections, and other related equipment. Maintain awareness of low-clearance areas, restricted-access roads, railroad crossings, terminal hazards, pedestrians, yard equipment, and other operational hazards. Follow all procedures for transporting hazardous materials or hazardous cargo when assigned, including applicable placarding, shipping papers, route restrictions, emergency response information, and required endorsements/training. Maintain possession and control of company property, cargo, containers, chassis, keys, access credentials, fuel cards, and electronic equipment. Do not leave loaded containers or company equipment unsecured in unauthorized locations. Immediately report accidents, cargo incidents, container damage, chassis damage, equipment failures, security incidents, traffic violations, or other unusual events to management and/or dispatch. Provide professional and courteous communication with terminal personnel, port workers, rail personnel, customers, warehouse personnel, security personnel, dispatchers, and the general public. Assist with troubleshooting operational issues involving containers, chassis, appointments, terminal gates, equipment, and delivery documentation. Maintain the tractor and assigned equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition. Perform other transportation, intermodal, and operational duties as assigned. Accountabilities Safe Vehicle Operation: Operate tractor-trailer combinations safely and defensively in highway, city, port, terminal, rail, warehouse, and customer environments. Container & Chassis Verification: Ensure the correct container, chassis, seal, and shipment are picked up, transported, and delivered. Equipment Inspection: Identify and report container, chassis, tractor, tire, brake, lighting, air-line, and locking-device defects before operating the equipment. Load & Equipment Security: Ensure containers are properly positioned and secured to the chassis before transportation. Terminal Compliance: Follow all applicable port, marine terminal, rail terminal, depot, customer, and facility-specific rules and procedures. TWIC & Security Compliance: Maintain required facility access credentials and comply with security procedures applicable to the driver's assigned locations and duties. Appointment Compliance: Make reasonable efforts to meet scheduled terminal and customer appointments and promptly communicate delays or circumstances outside the driver's control. Interchange Documentation: Accurately document equipment condition, container/chassis interchange information, seals, damage, and delivery/pickup activity. DOT/FMCSA Compliance: Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local commercial motor vehicle requirements. Hours-of-Service Compliance: Accurately record duty status and operate within applicable hours-of-service limitations. Weight Compliance: Ensure loads are operated within applicable gross vehicle weight, axle-weight, bridge, and route restrictions. Cargo Integrity: Protect the container and cargo from avoidable damage, unauthorized access, loss, or tampering while in the driver's custody. Communication: Maintain timely and accurate communication with dispatch and management regarding the status of loads, appointments, equipment, delays, and incidents. Incident Reporting: Immediately report accidents, injuries, equipment damage, container damage, seal discrepancies, security incidents, citations, or other significant events. Customer Service: Represent the company professionally when interacting with customers, terminals, ports, rail facilities, vendors, and the public. Equipment Care: Properly operate and safeguard assigned tractors, chassis, electronic equipment, access credentials, and other company property. Attendance & Reliability: Maintain dependable attendance and report for assigned routes and appointments on time and prepared to work. Regulatory & HazMat Compliance: When assigned hazardous materials, comply with all applicable DOT, FMCSA, PHMSA, terminal, and company requirements, including required endorsements and training QualificationsPhysical Requirements Ability to sit and operate a commercial motor vehicle for extended periods. Ability to repeatedly enter and exit the tractor and safely climb vehicle steps. Ability to inspect tractors, chassis, containers, tires, locking mechanisms, air lines, electrical connections, and other equipment. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, and maintain balance while performing inspections and connecting or disconnecting equipment. Ability to operate chassis landing gear, locking mechanisms, air-line connections, electrical connections, and other equipment components. Ability to manually open and close tractor and equipment compartments and perform routine equipment checks. Ability to routinely lift, carry, push, and pull materials or equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to walk on uneven surfaces, pavement, gravel, loading areas, terminal yards, and other industrial environments. Ability to safely climb stairs, steps, platforms, and other access points at terminals and customer facilities. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, and other environmental conditions. Ability to maintain situational awareness around moving trucks, cranes, forklifts, reach stackers, yard hostlers, trains, containers, pedestrians, and other industrial equipment. Ability to visually inspect equipment and identify damage, defects, leaks, tire conditions, lighting issues, and other safety concerns. Ability to hear and communicate effectively with dispatch, terminal personnel, customers, security personnel, and coworkers. Ability to maintain alertness, concentration, coordination, and sound judgment during extended periods of driving and terminal operations. Ability to safely perform work around active ports, rail yards, warehouses, distribution centers, and other industrial environments. Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
