Independence Preparatory Academy is a new, academically challenging, highly structured, and joyful K-8 school in Fairfield, AL. We are on a mission to equip all students with the academic tenacity and strength of character necessary to choose their destiny and create a fulfilling life. We develop empowered learners through agency, purpose, and tenacity. 

In August 2025, Independence Preparatory Academy opened its doors to 60 students in kindergarten through second grade. We will continue to grow until we reach a total capacity of 485 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. We are actively building a team that shares our belief that with rigorous academics, high-quality instruction, and character development, all students can excel in high school, college, and life.

Position Summary

The On-Call Special Education Substitute Teacher provides instructional and behavioral support in the absence of the regular special education teacher. The substitute works collaboratively with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and school leaders to ensure scholars continue to receive meaningful educational services aligned with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Assignments may include resource, inclusion, self-contained, or intervention settings depending on school needs.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Implement lesson plans and instructional activities prepared by the special education teacher.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Support the implementation of accommodations and modifications outlined in scholars' IEPs.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to meet individual learning needs.
  • Supervise and support students during instruction, transitions, meals, and other assigned activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with paraprofessionals, related service providers, and administrators.
  • Monitor student behavior using approved behavior management strategies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information in accordance with FERPA and school policies.
  • Complete attendance and required documentation.
  • Leave detailed notes regarding instructional progress, behavior, and any concerns for the returning teacher.
  • Follow all school safety procedures, emergency protocols, and health-related guidance.

QualificationsRequired
  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum)
  • Experience working with children or individuals with disabilities
  • Ability to successfully complete all required background checks
  • Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Previous experience in special education, intervention, behavioral support, or inclusive classrooms
  • Experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioral, communication, or developmental needs
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to actively supervise students throughout the school day.
  • Ability to assist students with classroom activities and mobility as needed.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and implement student safety procedures.
Schedule
  • On-call, as needed
  • School hours generally between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
  • Flexible scheduling based on your availability
Compensation
