This is a hands-on purchasing and material-planning position responsible for buying materials and components, managing purchase orders, working directly with suppliers, and ensuring materials are available to meet production schedules. This is not a supply-chain analytics or logistics-focused position. The ideal candidate has direct experience purchasing production materials in a manufacturing environment and is comfortable managing supplier relationships, negotiating pricing and delivery terms, using an ERP/MRP system, and resolving material shortages. Responsibilities Purchase raw materials, components, production supplies, outside services, and other items required to support manufacturing. Review ERP/MRP requirements and convert material demand into purchase orders. Create, issue, manage, and expedite purchase orders from initial placement through delivery. Monitor open purchase orders and follow up with suppliers to prevent material shortages and production delays. Negotiate supplier pricing, lead times, delivery schedules, minimum-order quantities, and other purchasing terms. Request and evaluate supplier quotations based on cost, quality, lead time, and delivery performance. Develop and maintain effective relationships with new and existing suppliers. Coordinate with production, inventory, engineering, quality, sales, and accounting to support manufacturing requirements. Support production planning by confirming material availability and communicating potential shortages or delivery risks. Respond quickly to changing production priorities, urgent requirements, supplier delays, and quality concerns. Maintain accurate pricing, lead times, order quantities, supplier information, and delivery dates in the ERP system. Monitor inventory levels, safety stock, Kanban replenishment, and material requirements. Support cycle counts, physical inventory, and the investigation of inventory discrepancies. Help identify and address excess, obsolete, and slow-moving inventory. Resolve supplier issues involving late deliveries, damaged or nonconforming materials, returns, credits, invoices, and pricing discrepancies. Track supplier performance in the areas of quality, cost, lead time, and on-time delivery. Identify opportunities to reduce costs, improve material flow, and strengthen purchasing and inventory processes. Participate in Lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous-improvement activities. Required Qualifications At least three years of direct purchasing or buyer/planner experience in a manufacturing environment. Professional experience purchasing materials, components, supplies, or outside services used in manufacturing. Hands-on experience creating, managing, and expediting purchase orders through an ERP/MRP system. Experience communicating and negotiating directly with suppliers. Working knowledge of MRP, inventory control, material planning, and manufacturing operations. Ability to recognize material shortages and take action to support production requirements. Strong organizational, follow-up, negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple suppliers, purchase orders, priorities, and deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook. Associate degree in business, supply chain, operations, or a related area, or equivalent relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications Five or more years of manufacturing purchasing or buyer/planner experience. Experience purchasing electronic, electrical, mechanical, or engineered components. Experience supporting production planning and manufacturing schedules. Experience with Kanban, Lean manufacturing, or 5S. Experience managing supplier quality, delivery, cost, and lead-time performance. Work Environment and Physical Requirements This position is fully onsite at our Raynham manufacturing facility. Work is performed in both office and manufacturing environments. Ability to regularly sit, stand, walk, and bend. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds when necessary. May be exposed to typical manufacturing conditions, including noise, dust, heat, cold, and odors.
