Student Tutor– Liberal Arts in Prison Program (LAPP)

The Liberal Arts in Prison Program (LAPP) seeks a responsible and detail-oriented student to serve as a tutor supporting academic programming for incarcerated students at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (Mitchellville, IA). This position will support MUSIC-395: Sounds of Collective Motion, taught by Professor Putu Hiranmayena.

Position Overview
The Student Tutor supports instructional aspects of the program, working closely with students, faculty, and staff to help ensure the academic support of the course.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide tutoring support and assist in gathering research materials for incarcerated college students
• Coordinate communication among incarcerated students, faculty, and program staff

Details

• The tutor will be support the class: MUS-395: Sounds of Collective Motion, taught by Professor Putu Hiranmayena.
• Note: MUS-395 will be taught both in the prison and on campus during Fall 2026.
• This position will conduct tutoring sessions independently on Fridays from 1:45- 3:30 pm at the prison. With travel time, the tutor needs to be available from 12:30 - 4:30 pm on Fridays.
• Additionally, the tutor needs to be available to either:
  • A. Be currently enrolled in MUS-395 on campus -or-
  • B. Be available to attend at least one class session on campus on either Tuesday and/or Thursday from 2:40 - 4 pm (no credit offered, but will be paid).

Qualifications

• Strong academic background; coursework in music preferred.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• High level of attention to detail and adaptability in a range of work environments
• Ability to maintain clear and professional boundaries in a correctional setting

Additional Requirements

• Willingness to travel regularly from campus to Mitchellville (45 minutes from campus).
• Availability to work required hours on Friday afternoons and attend at least one class per week (on campus).
• Valid driver’s license required to drive to the prison; use of a campus vehicle is preferred, with mileage reimbursement available for personal vehicle use
• Be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior.

Position Details

• Duration: This position will begin the week of Sept. 7 through the end of the semester.
• Hours: 10-15 hours per week, may depend on research needs.
• Clearance: Approval required, including a background check.
• Eligibility: F-1 visa holders are not eligible for this position.
