This is a student position that checks materials out and in, locates reserve and ILL materials, re-shelves returned materials, helps patrons find answers to directional, basic/in-depth research questions, and can explain library policy and procedures as well.Ā  As a peer educator, provides mini instructional sessions on use of Grinnell College Libraries’ catalog and website (including database, index, and web searching).Ā  Provides frontline technical support and problem-solving for library patrons using PC and Macs and will refer tech issues to ITS Help Desk and library staff as needed.Ā  This position will also performs a variety of library maintenance functions that contribute to the smooth operation of the library services

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Checks in/out, recalls/renews and processes fines of library materials
  2. Provides assistance on basic and in-depth research questions and mini instructional sessions using library catalog, database, or website
  3. Answers questions regarding circulation/reserve policies and procedures, directional/technical and other informational inquiries (in person, phone, email)
  4. Supports all public facing library technology and provides patron assistance on problem-solving technology issues including using the ITS Help Ticket System, and internal library ticket system
  5. Exercises independent judgment; making decisions necessary for maintenance of positive relations with library patrons
  6. Assist library staff in the opening/closing procedures
  7. Responds correctly to library security alarms
  8. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning duties in public areas of the library
  9. Assists in stacks maintenance (shelving, pulling, shifting library materials)
  10. Supports Outreach Cluster with event set-up/tear-down
  11. Responsible for library operations as needed in the absence of a library staff
  12. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Experience in customer-service, technology, and research preferred

Good interpersonal communication skills are essential

Ability to perform detail-oriented tasks with excellent accuracy and efficiency

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Requires ability to work well with the public (sometimes in high-pressure situations), work unsupervised and independently; must possess good communication skills (written and verbal); requires solid computer literacy and knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system and the Media Room classification system.

Specific Skills Acquired/Developed: Intermediate personal computer skills, including electronic mail, routine database activity, research information literacy, basic computer software/hardware troubleshooting, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
