  • Salary details are not specified, but candidates are expected to have prior experience in psychology courses.

The Psychology Department seeks tutors with availability throughout the academic year. The most common courses for which we arrange tutors are PSY 113 (Intro) and PSY 225 (Research Methods), though students can request tutoring in any course.

Apply by September 3, 2026 to be assured of being considered for this semester.  Applications received after September 3 may not have timely access to necessary training, so there may be a delay before you can be considered for work opportunities.

If you would like to be considered for inclusion on our list of available tutors, please reply through ADP with a cover letter that includes the following information (short answers and bullet point format are fine):

1)     Your name, major, and expected graduation year. Current email address.

2)     Courses you are interested in tutoring.

3)     A list of Psychology courses you have taken at Grinnell, or elsewhere. List the course instructor and course grade. Make sure to include your introductory experience (AP/IB/PSY 113).

4)    The name of your advisor, and any other psychology faculty you feel can speak to your strengths and ability to serve as a tutor. (We will contact them.)

5)     Have you worked for the College before (are your tax documents on file)?

Tutors are connected with tutees on an as-needed basis, and with the approval of individual course faculty. Your application information will be kept on file, and we will reach out to you based on need.

Being on the list of tutors does not guarantee that you will actually be asked to tutor. Tutors work on an as-needed basis, and sometimes there is no need.   When tutoring happens, it typically amounts to a few hours of work a semester maximum.  In rarer cases, tutors meet weekly with tutees.

Please email Barbara Brown [BROWNB] with any questions about the position.

Qualifications

For PSY113, we look for generally good students who have taken several psychology courses. For PSY 225,  strong performance in the course is a primary consideration. All tutors must have the patience and persistence to help students both gain better understanding of course material and develop effective study strategies.
