Department Description

The Honors Scholar Program offers students a unique and challenging set of interdisciplinary courses that promote intellectual curiosity and problem solving. Honors scholars engage in collaborative project-based learning experiences throughout their courses and co-curriculum. The program emphasizes research skills, ethical and cultural awareness, community-building, and reflective practice.

Job Description

Honors Advisers attend the weekly colloquium (Tuesdays, 12-1), engage the assigned reading, and lead their respective sections in dialogue. Outside of class, they engage individual students in thoughtful, inventive activities across all stages of the writing process, from assignment review, research and invention to drafting and revising. In one-on-one meetings, Honors Advisers help student writers with topic selection, source evaluation, genre choice, thesis development, textual organization, and idea synthesis. Honors Advisers learn to analyze rhetorical situations, provide useful feedback, and manage their own schedules.

Job Location/ Hours Required

The candidate will perform most/all job duties in (Phillips 120 and Finch Hall ). Hours may vary depending on the job requirements; however, the total number of hours a student employee may work per week is 20 hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage students in group discussion over a reading.
  • Communicate with student writers about their writing processes and ideas.
  • Motivate students to deepen their thinking and to take intellectual risks in their writing.
  • Manage schedules for one-on-one tutoring sessions.
  • Communicate effectively with professors and students.
  • Design and present co-curricular workshops on writing and research.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong reading and academic writing skills
  • Familiarity with MLA & APA citation formats
  • Good time management skills
  • Friendly demeanors.

Desired Skills:

  • Academic research and source integration
  • Blackboard, MS Word, and other education technology
  • Self-awareness and metacognitive skills
  • Hours per week = on average, 10
  • Must have a minimum 3.3 overall GPA
