Job DetailsJob Location: Main Office - Houston, TX 77012 Community Family Centers Centros Familiares de la Comunidad Job Description Job Title: Assistant STEAM Tutor Reports To: STEAM Program Coordinator & Director of Youth Services Location: JP McGovern Sports and Recreation Building (7318 Avenue F, Houston, TX 77011) Department: Youth Services / S.T.E.A.M. Employment Status: Part-Time (Non-Exempt) Hourly Rate: $12 Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM (Approximately 20 hours/week)   I. Job Summary The Assistant STEAM Tutor is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Community Family Centers (CFC) STEAM Afterschool Program. This hybrid role has dual core functions: providing direct classroom and instructional support to Lead STEAM Tutors during afterschool activities, and riding agency vans to manage student behavior and ensure safety while traveling from local East End schools to our facility. II. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Van Transit Safety & Behavior Management Active Passenger Supervision: Ride daily on the agency's school transport vans to supervise student passengers, enforce safety guidelines, and manage student behavior during transit. Support Van Drivers: Assist the van driver by actively maintaining order, keeping noise levels low for safe driving, and addressing behavior issues immediately using positive discipline techniques. Roster & Transit Verification: Assist in cross-checking students against the approved school pick-up list, checking that only registered students are transported, and reporting absences immediately to the Program Coordinator. 2. Classroom Support & Activity Facilitation Instructional Assistance: Assist Lead Tutors in guiding students through homework completion, focused reading blocks, and foundational mathematics activities. Hands-On STEAM Support: Support lead staff during applied Project-Based Learning (PBL) challenges, helping students safely navigate activities in coding, robotics, 3D printing, drone exploration, and basic sciences. Supervision during Transitions: Monitor students during daily check-ins, snack times, recreational gym periods. Classroom Management: Work with Lead Tutors to maintain a positive, inclusive, and encouraging classroom culture that reduces disengagement and behavioral shut-downs. III. Education & Experience Requirements High School Diploma or GED required. Experience working with youth in a camp, afterschool, or tutoring environment (preferred). IV. Skills and Qualifications Ability to maintain a calm, positive attitude under pressure in fast-paced transition environments. Bilingual (Spanish/English) is highly preferred to effectively support our student base and communicate with East End families. Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain firm, fair, and positive boundaries. Ability to obtain a clean criminal history background check (mandatory for working with youth in agency vehicles). Attention to detail and accuracy in tracking student attendance and behavior logs.
