Job Summary

The Maker Education Intern will engage children and families in creative projects that develop problem-solving skills and spark interest in science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. that will serve as near-peer mentors and role models in a variety of community settings. The Maker Education Intern will work with the Maker Education team, engaging visitors through interaction within museum galleries, facilitating workshops and activities. This facilitation includes ensuring that the Museum’s policies are upheld, that the exhibits are reset as needed for visitor interactions, that visitors are safe and receive rapid first aid assistance if needed, and that visitors enjoy their overall experience at the Museum. Excellent interpersonal, planning, communication, and organizational skills needed. Part-time Evening and weekend hours as necessary, flexibility of work hours and days required. This internship is for three months.

 

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Lead and facilitate workshops in the Chevron Maker Annex.
  • Assist in co-creating maker activities in line with the goals of the Children’s Museum Houston.
  • Facilitate interactive making explorations for youth and families.
  • Perform necessary maintenance, setup, and teardown for each program.
  • Represent the Maker Education Initiative and the Children’s Museum of Houston in a positive manner via attitude, communications, and enthusiasm. 
  • Assist in evaluation efforts. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Children’s Museum Houston.

  • Maintain and prepare supplies necessary for programming.
  • Interact with staff and visitors.

 

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent

 

Experience Required

Experience working in educational settings


Skills Required

  • An interest in creativity, DIY art or science projects, and/or making things.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills. 
  • The ability to interact effectively with children, adults, and host organization staff.
  • A level of comfort presenting in front of audiences of children and families. 
  • A passion for educating the public

 

Physical Demand

  • Light  Lifting over 5 lbs & up to 25 lbs          
  • Occasional Over 15% & up to 40%

                        

Working Conditions                

  • Inside Gallery conditions for the majority of work time                                            
  • Some weekends and nights

 

Travel Requirements

Inside the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area

On a rare occasion, travel may be required; less than 25% of working time
