Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Adult Services, the Treatment Associate Supervisor (TAS) provides leadership, supervision, training, and operational oversight for Treatment Associates assigned to Hina Mauka’s residential services. The TAS is responsible for supporting a safe, secure, therapeutic, and well-maintained residential environment while promoting the safety and well-being of clients and staff.
The TAS communicates and collaborates regularly with the Director and Manager of Adult Services, clinical supervisors, medical personnel, and other members of the treatment team to support effective program operations and continuity of care. The TAS is available to provide scheduled supervisory and operational support during programming and non-programming hours, including weekends and holidays, as required.
The TAS maintains professional boundaries and protects the confidentiality of clients and client records in accordance with Hina Mauka policies and all applicable federal and state confidentiality requirements.
I. Essential Functions
1. Provides direct supervision, leadership, coaching, and training to Treatment Associates. Assigns work responsibilities, monitors staff performance, maintains appropriate supervisory documentation, and provides ongoing guidance and feedback.
2. Participates in personnel-related activities, including staff selection, orientation, performance evaluations, staffing recommendations, corrective action, and disciplinary processes in accordance with Hina Mauka policies and applicable Equal Employment Opportunity requirements.
3. Promotes Hina Mauka’s mission, values, policies, and professional standards. Encourages teamwork, accountability, effective communication, and a respectful work environment.
4. Communicates new or revised policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and operational expectations to Treatment Associates and ensures staff understand and appropriately implement changes.
5. Monitors residential operations to support compliance with applicable CARF standards, Hawaiʻi Department of Health Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) requirements, federal and state regulations, and Hina Mauka policies and procedures.
6. Serves as the designated supervisory staff member during assigned programming and non-programming hours and provides leadership and direction to staff as needed.
7. Responds to and assists with the management of crises, emergencies, behavioral incidents, and other significant events. Ensures appropriate clinical, medical, administrative, or emergency personnel are contacted when necessary and that required documentation and notifications are completed.
8. Monitors environmental, fire, health, and safety conditions within the residential program. Reports unsafe conditions, injuries, illnesses, and incidents in a timely manner and ensures staff follow established OSHA, sanitation, infection-control, and workplace safety requirements.
9. Responds appropriately to client concerns and behavioral issues and ensures incidents and interventions are documented according to Hina Mauka policies and procedures.
10. Provides appropriate support, guidance, and informal counseling to clients during non-structured programming while maintaining professional boundaries and working within the scope of the TAS position.
11. Provides orientation to new clients and reviews or explains residential program expectations, rules, schedules, and relevant sections of the client handbook.
12. Facilitates effective communication among clients, Treatment Associates, clinical staff, medical personnel, and program leadership to support continuity of care and safe program operations.
13. Maintains required client documentation, contributes to progress notes as appropriate, and participates in chart reviews or audits to support documentation accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
14. Coordinates and supervises client activities during non-structured program hours and ensures adequate staff coverage and appropriate supervision of the residential environment.
15. Within the scope of assigned responsibilities and under the direction of authorized medical personnel, observes and reports changes in client condition, including clients receiving withdrawal management or other medical monitoring. Promptly consults with nursing or other medical personnel when a client demonstrates symptoms or conditions requiring medical assessment or intervention.
16. Coordinates or arranges client transportation to scheduled appointments, medical services, or emergency care as directed by authorized clinical, medical, or nursing personnel.
17. Participates in shift-change communication to ensure continuity of care and may participate in treatment planning conferences, case consultations, behavioral interventions, and other multidisciplinary activities as appropriate.
18. Monitors the general cleanliness, orderliness, security, and safety of the residential unit and addresses or reports identified concerns in a timely manner.
19. Participates in management, supervisory, staff, and other required meetings as scheduled by the Director or Manager of Adult Services.
II Other Functions
1.Performs other related duties as assigned and supports residential program operations consistent with the responsibilities and scope of the position.
III. Qualification Requirements
Education/Experience and Training
1. Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) and/or an advanced degree in Social Work, Psychology, Behavioral Science, or a related human services field required.
2. Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a substance use disorder treatment, behavioral health, mental health, psychiatric, or related treatment setting.
3. Supervisory, leadership, or staff-training experience preferred.
4. Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain and maintain certification as required by Hina Mauka.
5. Valid Hawaiʻi State driver's license with an acceptable driving record consistent
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, behavioral challenges, and involvement with the criminal justice system.
2. Ability to supervise, coach, train, and support staff in a professional, respectful, and nonjudgmental manner while maintaining appropriate accountability and performance expectations.
3. Ability to create an environment in which staff can openly communicate work-related concerns, challenges, and recommendations while maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
4. Demonstrated ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and respond effectively during stressful situations, behavioral incidents, crises, and emergencies.

7. Ability to maintain accurate and timely staff supervision, training, performance, incident, and program-related records.
8. Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with clinical, medical, administrative, and support staff as part of a multidisciplinary treatment environment.
9. Working knowledge of confidentiality, client rights, workplace safety, professional boundaries, and applicable behavioral health and substance use treatment standards.
10. Ability to work a flexible schedule and provide supervisory support by telephone or in person when assigned, including assistance with urgent staffing needs, crises, weekends, holidays, and non-programming hours.
IV. Physical/Mental Demands
1. The position generally requires light physical activity with periods of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the residential environment.
2. The employee may occasionally be required to lift, carry, move, or assist with supplies and equipment consistent with job responsibilities.
3. The position requires the ability to maintain attention, exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively, and respond appropriately during stressful situations, emergencies, behavioral incidents, and changing program conditions.
4. The employee may have occupational exposure to infectious or contagious conditions and may be required to assist with emergency response consistent with training, certification, Hina Mauka policy, and the scope of the position.
5. Protective Equipment: Use of non-sterile medical gloves and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by assigned duties, infection-control procedures, workplace safety standards, and Hina Mauka policy.
