Role Overview

A CDL is required for this position.

This position is responsible for performing general highway maintenance duties that keep INDOT assets in good working condition to ensure customer satisfaction. Seasonal Winter Program Workers perform snow and ice removal and related maintenance duties by operation of snow plow, and other winter operations duties as required. Traffic maintenance duties such as repairing and installing traffic signs and pavement markings are also required job duties for this position.

Preferred Start Dates:
Start on any of the following dates and receive a $250 sign on bonus.

  • November 9th, 2026
  • December 7th, 2026

 

Retention Bonus:
A $500 retention bonus offered to Winter Seasonal Maintenance Worker working full-time hired on or before 12/7/26 who stay through 3/27/27.

 

Location:

This Seasonal Winter position is in INDOT's LaPorte Sub District, locations include: LaPorte, Michigan City, Chesterton, and Wanatah.
 
Pay Rate:
This position pays an hourly rate of $21.00.
 
 
 
 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and right-of-way.
  • Move and load supplies and materials.
  • Winter operation duties including snow and ice removal.
  • Perform emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades.
  • Perform equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections.
  • Comply with INDOT Safety Policies and Procedures.; 
  • Perform miscellaneous labor tasks.
  • Perform job documentation tasks such as entry into the Work Management System (WMS).

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • High school graduate or High School Equivalent (HSE) preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Must have the ability to move 50 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to endure exposure to inclement weather.
  • Must have the ability to operate specialty traffic equipment (e.g. bucket trucks, paint equipment, etc.).
  • Must have the ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Must have the ability to work unpredictable and non-traditional hours as necessary to perform winter operations activities.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
