Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering (KIWE) is seeking a Mechanical Data Solutions Engineer to join our Lenexa, Kansas office. This role is responsible for developing, improving, and supporting data-driven mechanical solutions that strengthen estimating, engineering, and project delivery workflows for complex industrial projects.

The Mechanical Data Solutions Engineer partners closely with engineering, estimating, procurement, construction, and start-up teams to translate project requirements, model data, and business needs into reliable digital tools, reporting solutions, and integrated data workflows. This position plays a critical role in connecting engineering and estimating information, improving data quality, enabling model-based quantity and cost insights, and supporting consistent decision-making across project teams.

In addition to delivering high-quality data solutions, the Mechanical Data Solutions Engineer supports the growth and continuous improvement of mechanical estimating and engineering workflows through process innovation, technical collaboration, and practical implementation of digital tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain data workflows that support mechanical estimating, engineering, procurement, construction, and project delivery teams.
  • Develop and improve processes for extracting, transforming, validating, and organizing mechanical data from models, drawings, specifications, vendor information, estimating tools, and other project systems.
  • Create reliable reporting and analytics solutions that provide clear visibility into quantities, scope, cost drivers, design progress, data completeness, and project trends.
  • Partner with mechanical engineering, estimating, BIM/VDC, procurement, construction, and project controls teams to understand business needs and translate them into practical data solutions.
  • Support model-based quantity takeoff, data exchange, and digital estimating workflows by improving how mechanical information is structured, connected, and reused across platforms.
  • Develop automation tools, dashboards, templates, and repeatable processes that reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and increase confidence in mechanical data.
  • Establish and maintain data quality checks, validation rules, and review processes to identify missing, inconsistent, or inaccurate mechanical information.
  • Work with project teams to troubleshoot data issues, reconcile discrepancies, and improve the reliability of information used for estimating and decision-making.
  • Coordinate with internal technology, analytics, and application teams to support integration between engineering models, estimating systems, databases, reporting tools, and enterprise platforms.
  • Document data workflows, standards, assumptions, and tool instructions so project teams can apply solutions consistently.
  • Provide training and technical support to users adopting new mechanical data tools, reports, and workflows.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements that enhance mechanical data management, automation, analytics, and model-based project delivery.
  • Incorporate AI-enabled tools and methods into mechanical data workflows where appropriate, ensuring solutions are developed, validated, documented, and governed through a consistent and quality-focused methodology.
  • Evaluate opportunities to use AI-assisted development, automation, anomaly detection, and data quality monitoring to improve speed, consistency, and reliability while maintaining human review, traceability, and practical engineering judgment.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to standardize, simplify, and scale mechanical data solutions across projects and teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, data analytics, computer science, construction management, or a related technical field; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience supporting engineering, estimating, BIM/VDC, construction, or project delivery workflows, preferably within industrial, water, EPC, or design-build environments.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, mechanical estimating concepts, model-based quantities, engineering deliverables, and project data structures.
  • Experience working with data from engineering models, drawings, specifications, estimating systems, databases, spreadsheets, and other project delivery platforms.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas, structured tables, data cleanup, and large dataset analysis.
  • Experience with Power BI, Power Query, data modeling, dashboards, reporting, or similar business intelligence and analytics tools preferred.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, relational databases, data transformation, data validation, or data integration concepts.
  • Experience with BIM/model data, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Smart 3D, or similar engineering and design platforms preferred.
  • Ability to develop repeatable tools, templates, reports, and workflows that improve data quality, reduce manual effort, and support consistent decision-making.
  • Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to identify missing, inconsistent, or inaccurate information.
  • Ability to translate business needs into practical data solutions and communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical users.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across engineering, estimating, BIM/VDC, procurement, construction, project controls, technology, and analytics teams.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the ability to clearly define workflows, assumptions, standards, validation steps, and user instructions.
  • Self-motivated and continuous improvement oriented, with the ability to manage priorities, troubleshoot issues, and deliver reliable solutions in a schedule-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled tools, automation concepts, or emerging data technologies, with an understanding of how to apply them responsibly to improve engineering, estimating, analytics, and data quality workflows.
  • Ability to support evolving AI and automation practices through consistent documentation, validation, governance, and quality control methods that promote repeatable and trustworthy outcomes.
  • Professional Engineer license, Engineer-in-Training certification, Autodesk certifications, Microsoft certifications, or other relevant technical credentials preferred but not required.
