Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry invites applications for a full-time or part-time General Dentist faculty position in the Department of Restorative Dentistry. The successful candidate will be a dynamic educator and clinician with a passion for academic excellence and community engagement. This individual will support pre-doctoral and post-doctoral programs through clinical supervision, didactic instruction, and participation in departmental strategic initiatives. Faculty are also expected to contribute to institutional service, scholarly activity, and community outreach, including support of Meharry's Mobile Dental Unit and associated events.

Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities):

  • Supervise and instruct students during clinical patient care and restorative procedures.
  • Provide didactic lectures and seminars to pre-doctoral and post-doctoral dental students.
    • Facilitate laboratory instruction and practical exercises in restorative dentistry.
    • Participate in the development and continuous improvement of the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral curricula.
    • Assist in departmental strategic planning, academic program reviews, and outcomes assessment.
    • Serve as a mentor to students and junior faculty.
    • Participate in institutional service including committees and faculty development programs.
    • Support the Mobile Dental Unit and participate in community-based oral health outreach events.
    • Stay current with advances in evidence-based dentistry, emerging technologies, and best practices in clinical instruction.
    • Engage in scholarly activities and research opportunities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

                                                                                                               

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical dentistry with proficiency in diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in teaching within pre-doctoral and/or post-doctoral dental education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a faculty, students residents and diverse patient population.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in restorative dentistry.
  • Commitment to academic and clinical excellence, health equity, and community service.
  • Ability to support institutional mission and departmental goals.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred:

  • Experience in curriculum development and outcomes assessment.
  • Prior involvement in academic processes, operational and/or strategic planning.
  • Experience with community-based dentistry, including mobile dental programs.
  • Record of scholarly activity or contributions to research.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from a CODA-accredited institution.
  • Documented teaching experience in clinical and/or didactic settings.
  • DDS/DMD equivalent Foreign Dental Degree

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Clinical practice experience.
  • Completion of an advanced education program in General Dentistry (AEGD, GPR, or similar).
  • Previous faculty experience in a dental academic setting.
  • Engagement in research or published scholarly work.

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

  • Current license to practice dentistry in the State of Tennessee or eligibility for licensure in Tennessee by the start date of employment.
  • Obtain a limited Educational Licensure granted by the State of Tennessee Board of Dentistry

Licensure, Certification or Registration Preferred:

  • DEA registration.
  • Board certification or eligibility (if applicable to area of expertise).
  • Sedation or other clinical certifications relevant to restorative dental care.
