6-month contract role with a local authority

Summary

  • This is a 6-month contract role with a local authority, aimed at providing high-quality legal advice and representation on a wide range of licensing matters. The Licensing Lawyer will ensure the Council's regulatory and licensing functions are delivered in accordance with legislation, policy, and best practice. The role involves managing a varied caseload, supporting Licensing Committees and Sub-Committees, representing the Council in legal proceedings, and contributing to the effective governance of licensing decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality legal advice and guidance on all aspects of licensing law to officers, senior management, and elected Members.
  • Advise on matters relating to the Licensing Act 2003, Gambling Act 2005, Local Government legislation, and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Draft and review legal documents, notices, determinations, policies, reports, and agreements.
  • Attend Licensing Committee and Licensing Sub-Committee hearings, including evening meetings where required.
  • Provide legal, procedural, and governance advice to Members during hearings and decision-making processes.
  • Ensure decisions are legally robust and compliant with statutory requirements.

Requirements

Essential Experience Required

  • Proven experience managing a caseload of licensing matters within a local authority, public sector organisation, or private practice.
  • Experience advising committees, elected Members, and senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable advocacy experience before Licensing Sub-Committees, tribunals, courts, or similar forums.

Essential Qualifications Required

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) entitled to practise in England and Wales.
