Our client, an established steel manufacturing company based in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, is looking for an experienced Instrumentation Technician to join its new plant maintenance team. The role is responsible for keeping the plant's process control and measurement systems accurate and reliable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned, preventative and breakdown maintenance on plant instrumentation and control systems.
  • Install, calibrate, test and maintain field instruments measuring temperature, pressure, flow and level.
  • Maintain and tune control loops, control valves, actuators and positioners.
  • Fault-find on PLC, SCADA and DCS systems and their I/O.
  • Maintain instrumentation on furnaces, cooling water systems and rolling mill processes.
  • Maintain analysers, thermocouples, pyrometers and weighing systems.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams and instrument datasheets.
  • Keep calibration records and instrument documentation up to date.
  • Follow lock-out/tag-out, permit-to-work and PPE procedures at all times.
  • Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately.
  • Support process improvements and plant modifications with engineering teams.
  • Be available for shift work, standby and emergency call-outs.


Requirements

  • Trade Tested Instrument Mechanician, or a National Diploma / N6 in Electrical Engineering (Instrumentation / Process Control).
  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in steel, foundry, heavy engineering or a similar heavy industrial environment is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of calibration equipment, field instruments and control loops.
  • Working experience with PLCs (e.g. Siemens, Allen-Bradley) and SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of HART, Profibus or similar communication protocols is advantageous.
  • Good understanding of the OHS Act and safe working practices.
  • Willingness to work shifts, overtime, standby and weekends.
  • Valid driver's licence, clear criminal record and ability to pass a medical assessment.
