Materials Manager Job Description - 18581


A Materials Manager is responsible for overseeing the procurement, storage, and distribution of supplies, equipment, and materials needed to support clinical operations, surgical procedures, and facility maintenance. The role ensures that the right materials are available at the right time, in the right condition, and at the right cost, while maintaining compliance with quality and safety standards  

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Procurement & Inventory Control: Plan and forecast supply needs, study historical sales data, and place purchase orders for high-quality medical equipment and supplies  
  • Vendor Management: Evaluate and interview suppliers, negotiate contracts, and maintain strong vendor relationships  
  • Inventory Management: Maintain accurate computerized inventories, conduct regular audits, and apply “just in time” methods to reduce costs  
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all materials meet minimum quality standards; test and inspect supplies upon arrival  
  • Emergency Preparedness: Maintain emergency supply sources and coordinate with other facilities during shortages  
  • Department Coordination: Work closely with clinical, surgical, and administrative departments to understand material needs and specifications.
  • Maintenance & Repairs: Coordinate repairs of surgical instruments and equipment; arrange for loaner equipment when needed.
  • Budgeting & Cost Control: Assist in preparing and managing budgets for supplies and equipment  
  • Compliance & Safety: Follow safe handling practices for hazardous materials and maintain workplace safety standards  

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or work-related experience of more than 5 years in the SCM environment  
  • Experience: Prior experience in healthcare materials management, procurement, or inventory control preferred  
  • Skills: Strong organizational and analytical abilities, negotiation skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of healthcare supply chain processes.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with inventory management software and computer systems  
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift, carry, and store supplies; frequent standing, bending, and reaching  

 

Work Environment

The Materials Manager works in a healthcare facility such as a hospital, surgery center, or outpatient clinic, often in close coordination with clinical staff. The role requires both administrative and hands-on responsibilities, including receiving, unpacking, and storing supplies, as well as managing vendor relationships and budgets
