Position: Geospatial Intern

Department: City Manager’s Office – Geospatial Services Division

Employment Status: Part-Time Non-Exempt On-Site, Not Remote

Compensation: $15.00/hour


POSITION SUMMARY 

The City of Morgantown is hiring a Geospatial Intern to work under the supervision of the Geospatial Services Manager in the City Manager’s Office. This internship will provide real-world experience for those who are learning GIS and mapping to help them excel in a career working with GIS. The Geospatial Intern will be involved in day-to-day municipal government GIS and will be expected to learn and perform a variety of duties including, but not limited to those listed under Essential Duties. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES 

  • Provide support for GIS projects across multiple departments.
  • Create maps for print and web distribution.
  • Perform data entry and geometry creation.
  • Perform scanning, cataloging, image processing, and organizing of paper maps and documents.
  • Complete field data collection with mobile device applications (i.e. Survey123 and Field Maps).
  • Perform regular cleaning of documents and hardware to ensure sufficient scan quality and limit hardware wear and tear.
  • Ensure paper document placement into appropriate folders, drawers, containers, and/or cabinets
  • Perform quality control of all data collected.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must be competent with a PC running Windows OS and Microsoft Office.
  • Must be competent with an Apple iOS or Android mobile device if requested to perform field data collection.
  • Must be able to show good problem-solving skills and understanding of geography.
  • Must be willing to learn along with meeting goals and deadlines set forth during the duration of the internship.
  • Must always present oneself in a professional and respectful manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Must be amenable with working in the office and outdoors.
  • Must be amenable to working in various temperatures and weather conditions if performing field data collection.
  • Indoor work includes long stretches of time sitting in front of a computer in an office setting. Outdoor work is required for the collection of data. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel; talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY & EQUIPMENT

  • Personal Computer with a Windows operating system.
  • Mobile device such as a mobile phone or tablet.
  • Trimble Bluetooth GPS receiver.
  • Office telephone.
  • ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of software, including, but not limited to: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise, along with mobile apps such as ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123 for ArcGIS, and Workforce for ArcGIS.

CONTACT & SUPERVISION

  • Position will report to the Geospatial Services Manager in the City Manager’s Office.
  • Position may have discussions with other departments for project knowledge gathering.
  • Position may participate in City Geospatial Operations meetings to assist in providing updates on work.
  • Position may have limited contact with the general public, dependent on project.

Requirements

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


Education:   

  • Candidate must be a current, graduating, or recently graduated   student from a two-or-four-year college with a degree in Geography, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
  • If a student working on an advanced degree, they must not hold a current assistantship, fellowship, or similar commitment to their school.
  • Applicable completed or current coursework in any of the following topics: geography, GIS, database management, image processing, map or plan comprehension, historic preservation, cataloging or indexing items, or personal computer (PC) competency.

Certification/License:

  • Be 18 years of age and eligible to work in West Virginia.
  • A valid driver’s license is required to operate a City vehicle; dependent on field work.

Experience:

  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience using a Windows PC.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior work or project experience in GIS is preferred.
  • Experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of software, including, but not limited to: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise, along with mobile apps such as ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123 for ArcGIS, and Workforce for ArcGIS.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
  • Experience collecting, processing, and exporting data in spatial (e.g., shapefiles, geodatabases) and non-spatial data formats and coordinate systems.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills to effectively work on multiple projects across different departments.
  • Scripting experience in languages such as Python or Arcade.
  • Basic knowledge and experience with using a large format sheet-fed scanner.
  • Ability to properly read, identify, and index various types of maps and documents.
