Visiting Assistant Professor

The Newcomb Art Department of Tulane University in New Orleans seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor to teach courses in Painting & Drawing during the 2026-27 academic year.

This is a one-year position that begins in July 31, 2026.  The teaching load is 3/3 and includes several 1000 level Painting or Drawing courses, which center on painting and drawing from observation. An MFA must be in hand by the position start date, and previous teaching experience is preferred.

The Newcomb Art Department is one of the largest and most important departments within the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane. Responsibilities

• Function: Teaches courses in Studio Art, painting and drawing (90% of job)
  • Performance Standards: Teaches a range of introductory to advanced studio art courses, offering a clear and detailed syllabus to students that is in accordance with SACS accreditation standards.  Students complete a set number of painting or drawing assignments as stated in the syllabus, becoming familiar and facile with drawing or painting materials used in the course. Students learn to discuss and critique visual artwork within the scope of the course.
• Function:  Performs other duties as requested or required, whether or not specifically mentioned in this job description.  Keeping studios and the prop room clean and organized is essential to shared spaces.  Serving on BFA committees within the department would be additionally helpful at the departmental level. (10% of job)
  • Performance Standards:  Exhibits a willingness to assume additional duties. Seeks the guidance of immediate supervisor and colleagues, especially as it relates to shared spaces.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

1.  MFA in Studio Art.
2. One year of previous teaching experience at the collegiate level.
3. Experience in teaching introductory courses in painting and drawing.
4. Ability to serve on BFA student committees.
5. Commitment to teaching excellence and effective instructional practices that support student learning across varied backgrounds and divergent perspectives and creates a respectful learning environment. 
6. Demonstrated record of academic excellence, with engagement in historical, contemporary, and evolving discourse in the arts that informs creative practice and teaching.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY: 

1. Comprehensive understanding of materials and methods to teach introductory levels of Painting and/or Drawing courses, which center on rendering from observation and thinking critically about and through painting and drawing mediums.
2. Solid analytical skills and attention to detail. 
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

5. Excellent interpersonal skills.
6. Ability to multitask and prioritize work assignments.
