About Us

The Veterinary Technician in the Institute for Animal Studies will assist Veterinarians in the care and treatment of animals.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Observe, perform physical examinations of and treat animals (all species). Identify ill animals and advise veterinarians of the severity and progression of illness. Independently perform routine blood, urine and fecal laboratory testing. Restrain, bleed, administer injections, analgesia, anesthesia and to euthanize animals (all species). Maintain records, including those relating to animal health, test results and samples sent to laboratories. Advise and train investigators, students and staff to perform routine restraint, bleeding and analgesia of animals. Identify and inform veterinarians of inhumane conditions or experiments, including spontaneous diseases and experimentally induced occurrences. Perform necropsy of rodents under direction. Package and ship animal tissue and body fluid samples. Separate overcrowded animals and assist in quarantine of animals. Breed and detect estrus or breeding activity by physical examination or observation. Stain and interpret antigens under direction and to prepare media for growth of cultured cells. Perform other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Veterinary Technology program
  • Basic knowledge of animal care, handling, and restraint techniques
  • Ability to follow veterinary protocols, safety procedures, and detailed instructions
  • Strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Compassionate, dependable, and attentive to animal welfare
  • Willingness to learn and receive hands-on training
  • Previous experience working with animals is preferred but not required
  • Experience with laboratory animals is a plus but not required
