About the Role

Participates as an essential member of the healthcare team by providing clinical lactation therapy for patients. Provides education and consultative services related to breastfeeding. Serves as a resource for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers in order to promote optimal patient care. Designs and provides patient and staff education programs.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

Initiates and receives referrals from physicians, nursing staff, and patients. Develops, implements, and evaluates an educational plan for patients requiring lactation services.

  • Assesses the educational needs of the breastfeeding mother and family. Identifies an individual plan to meet the breastfeeding mother’s needs.
  • Assures that lactation services are provided in a timely manner. Provides direct patient care lactation service to patients.
  • Performs in-patient consultations at the bedside and out-patient consultations, as necessary. Provides individual teaching and group classes to breastfeeding patients and families.
  • Documents Breastfeeding Education and related Patient Assessment. Records teaching and progress on appropriate documentation.
  • Submits accurate and timely documentation of billable services.

Educates, guides, assists, and serves as a resource to nursing staff, other members of the healthcare team and community who provide care to breastfeeding mothers.

  • Develops teaching plans and curriculum for patient education programs on breastfeeding.
  • Assists with educational programs and consultation/support for the nursing staff.
  • Assists in the development and/or review of all literature related to infant feeding that is distributed to patients in the hospital.

Confers regularly, when appropriate, with the relevant obstetrician, pediatrician, and nursing staff member on each patient’s special needs and progress in breastfeeding.

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Currently Certified as a Lactation Consultant by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
  • At least one (1) year of work or volunteer related lactation education counseling experience required.
  • Requires skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment, attention to detail and problem resolution.
  • Basic computer knowledge and ability to use audiovisual equipment required.
  • Fluency in additional languages preferred.

Compensation

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is PS/22S:  $61,802.00 - $74,239.00 - $88,273.00. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs. The expected salary range for this position is in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
