Position Summary

The housing counselor provides counseling and education to consumers who are considering a reverse mortgage. The housing counselor will provide information regarding how reverse mortgages work, including payment options, costs, tax implications, benefits and risks of a reverse mortgage. The counselor will provide guidance and resources to enable the client to make an informed decision and provide ongoing support to the client throughout the process, in compliance with HUD’s guidelines.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

This job description does not limit management’s ability to assign or adjust duties and responsibilities at any time. 

 

  • Provide both individualized face-to-face and phone Reverse Mortgage counseling services for HECM, Home Safe and Equity Elite products. 
  • Administer and file paperwork as required to meet HUD protocols and compliance requirements. internal and external compliance 
  • Enter data into client management system as required
  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date information on housing counseling industry changes. 
  • Assist in developing and updating referral sources in addition to reporting
  • Assist in ongoing efforts to improve office procedures to provide improved housing services to clients.
  • Assist with building new systems of service delivery by phone or in person, as needed.
  • Build relationships with lenders, realtors, and other professionals in the housing fields.
  • Assist in marketing efforts to promote programs and services, present at workshops where necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.


 

 

 

Position Qualifications

  • At least one-year HECM counseling experience preferred or an equivalent combination of previous housing counseling or credit counseling. 
  • Must already be HECM certified and HUD Counseling Certified.
  • Ability to perform math/accounting equations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to counsel on the phone and in-person.
  • Ability to be extremely detail oriented, compassionate, and consistent.


Other Requirements:

  • Basic computer and math skills
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, procedures, manuals, and SOPs
  • Capable of writing routine reports and client correspondence
  • Strong telephone etiquette, time management, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Able to comprehend and respond to verbal and written information from clients and colleagues

 

Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Occasional reaching, bending, and lifting for filing or material storage.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds as needed.
  • General office environment with moderate noise level.
  • The job requires printing and mailing information to clients. As a result, onsite attendance is required.

 

Work Location Requirement:
This role involves printing and mailing client materials, requiring full in-office presence 5 days a week.
