Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position): 

Support Modern II by strengthening day-to-day course logistics and student success—especially around phrase work—while serving as a steady peer resource, morale booster, and communication bridge between students and the professor.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Take attendance each class session and flag any patterns (absences, lateness, concerns) that may need professor attention

  • Be available as a peer resource for students to refine, review, and learn phrase work (outside of class as scheduled)

  • Help connect students to department resources (studio etiquette, practice strategies, supports, etc.)

  • Support a positive course culture: encouragement, morale, and community care

  • Notice and relay any student concerns or course issues to the professor in a timely, professional way

Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills) 

  • Prior experience in modern/technique coursework at St. Olaf (Modern I or equivalent; Modern II preferred)

  • Strong grasp of phrase work, rehearsal habits, and embodied learning practices

  • Dependable, prompt, and comfortable supporting peers in a studio setting

  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality when student concerns arise

Physical and Environmental Factors:

This position requires crouching, kneeling/crawling, stooping, twisting/pivoting, climbing/balancing, and reaching overhead to perform the essential functions. It also requires rare exposure to loud noise to perform the essential functions. Candidates must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
