Zachry Engineering Corporation is seeking an experienced Instrumentation Designer II to join our Omaha, Nebraska office. This position is responsible for the design and development of instrumentation and control system deliverables for industrial, power generation, manufacturing, renewable energy, and process facility projects.

The Instrumentation Designer II will work closely with instrumentation engineers, process engineers, electrical engineers, and other design disciplines to develop detailed design packages that support the construction, operation, and maintenance of complex facilities. This role requires a strong understanding of industrial instrumentation systems, control systems, and design standards, along with the ability to work independently on moderate-complexity assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop instrumentation and controls design deliverables for EPC and consulting projects.
  • Prepare and maintain:
    • Instrument location plans
    • Instrument installation details
    • Loop diagrams
    • Interconnection and wiring diagrams
    • Instrument index updates
    • Control system architecture drawings
    • Junction box and marshalling cabinet layouts
    • Cable schedules and routing drawings
    • Instrument hookups and tubing details
    • P&ID markups and instrument references
  • Coordinate instrumentation designs with process, piping, electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural disciplines.
  • Review vendor documentation and incorporate equipment information into project deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews, model reviews, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, and constructability evaluations.
  • Perform field walkdowns and site assessments to verify existing conditions and support project execution.
  • Support engineering teams with drawing updates, design changes, and technical documentation.
  • Apply company standards, client specifications, and industry codes to all design work.
  • Assist in developing project estimates, schedules, and design execution plans.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers and drafters as needed.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Drafting Technology, Electrical Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Minimum 2-7 years of electrical design experience supporting industrial, power, energy, manufacturing, or EPC projects.
    • Proficiency with AutoCAD and other industry-standard design software.
    • Experience developing electrical design deliverables from engineering sketches, specifications, and marked-up drawings.
      • Working knowledge of field instrumentation including:
        • Pressure transmitters
        • Flow instruments
        • Level instruments
        • Temperature instruments
        • Control valves
        • Analytical instrumentation
      • Understanding of control system interfaces including DCS, PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems.
      • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
      • Ability to work independently while supporting multidisciplinary project teams.

    Preferred

    • Experience in EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project environments.
    • Proficiency with Smart 3D (S3D), Revit, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or MicroStation.
    • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, and applicable industry standards.

 

Physical Demands

Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, email, use of arm/hand steadiness, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, multi limb coordination, oral expression, and comprehension. May be required to lift, carry and move objects safely.

Work Environment

Work will be in a general office environment operating and functioning in a fast-paced work environment. Occasionally required to work in an industrial location where noise levels will be moderate to high. Job sites may contain the following: light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools, people standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking. Noise levels vary and may include bells, whistles, and alarms.
