Position Summary:
The Instructional Coach I supports the delivery of individualized, strengths-based professional development to teachers, and education staff through the Practice-Based Coaching model. Under general guidance, the role contributes to building staff capacity to implement effective teaching practices, support children’s learning and development, and align instructional approaches with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework.Â
Essential Functions:
- Supports the development of positive, collaborative coaching relationships with education staff under the guidance of the head of the county education team or designated supervisor.Â
- Conducts classroom and home-based observations, following established tools and procedures, to identify instructional strengths and areas of growth.Â
- Assists education staff in identifying and achieving professional growth goals that promote children’s school readiness outcomes.Â
- Supports coaching sessions by modelling effective teaching strategies and reinforcing research-based best practices, as appropriate.Â
- Facilitate reflective discussions and problem-solving activities to support continuous quality improvement efforts.Â
- Documents coaching sessions, tracks staff progress toward goals, and compiles reports for review by supervisor or specialist.
- Coordinates with supervisors and coaching staff to support alignment of coaching activities with program-wide professional development goals.Â
- Assists with the coordination and delivery of group training or workshops related to instructional practices, curriculum implementation, and family engagement.Â
- In collaboration with Education team support the development of the CDA process with the CCR&R. Â
- Maintains confidentiality and contributes to a supportive learning environment that respects diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and learning styles.Â
- Performs additional duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational priorities.Â
Technical & Functional Competencies:
- Ability to implement the Practice-Based Coaching cycle, including shared goal setting, focused observation, and reflection/feedback.
- Knowledgeable in adult learning theories and relationship-based coaching.
- Working knowledge of the Pyramid Model with the ability to apply established practices to coaching, observation, and feedback activities under general guidance.
- Applies effective communication skills to convey information, document coaching activities, and collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
- Effective coaching practices and strategies, with ability to strengthen skillset (Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills, and Reflective Supervision endorsement).
- Knowledge of the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and research-based early childhood practices.
- Ability to analyze classroom practices, develop action steps, and support implementation of improvement plans.
- Culturally responsive practices and ability to engage with staff and families from diverse backgrounds.
- Competence in documentation, data collection, and use of technology (Microsoft Office Suite, virtual coaching platforms).
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.Â
- Minimum two (2) years of relevant work experience in early childhood classroom teaching or instructional support.Â
- Preferred:Â Experience with coaching, mentoring, or adult professional development.Â

Certification Requirements:
- Practice Based Coaching (PBC) Certification (required; may be obtained upon hire).
- Reliability in the Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool (TPOT) and Teaching Pyramid Infant-Toddler Observation Scale (TPITOS) (required; may be obtained upon hire).
- Oregon Registry Master Trainer status preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position has no supervisory responsibility. Â
Work Environment:
- This position operates in classroom, office, and occasional home-based environments.
- There may be frequent interruptions, evening, or weekend work, and working additional hours during peak periods.
Other:
- Successful enrollment in Oregon’s Central Background Registry (CBR) through the OR Dept. of Early Learning and Care (required).
- Ability to pass a sponsored physical examination and communicable disease assessment.
- This position may require driving a personal vehicle, must possess current driver’s license, and auto insurance coverage.
Pay Range:
- The pay range for this position is $56,600.00 to $70,800.00 annually.
- Placement within the range is determined by factors such as relevant experience, skills, certifications, and internal equity.
